Nathan I was messing with him as he was over my house a few weeks ago with Paul. Oh and he was driving Paul's GP and loving it.
At the rate Mini is going the 3rd Gens are going to be like Hondas. Booooooring
Oh I don't hide the fact that I don't like the second gens. Just as much as the purest original mini owners don't like all of us "BMW Mini's".
It's ok we all get along and I would sell or trade my R53 for a good original mini 7 days a week.-

This is a compilation of posts from various sources around the interwebs.
N14 Engine - N14B16AC (171hp / 177 ft-lbs)
- Infinitely variable single VANOS (intake only)
- Siemens DME MED17.2 engine management
N18 Engine - N18B16M0 (181hp / 191 ft-lbs)
- Infinitely variable double VANOS
- Map-controlled oil pump
- Variable valve timing (Valvetronic) with 3-phase servomotor and integrated eccentric shaft sensor
- Composite camshaft construction
- New piston design
- Siemens DME MEVD17.2.2
The PCV design is updated in the N18. Rather than an external hose on the passenger side, the vacuum line is internal to the valve cover. This is (presumably) intended to reduce propensity for effluents pooling in the intake manifold. The boost line between the valve cover and turbo intake pipe is also different but seems to be functionally equivalent.
The N18 added a cosmetic cover over the front of the valve cover.
The N18 adds a small heat shield over the turbo oil pipe to help mitigate any coking in the line.
The turbo intake pipe in the N18 is rigid, as opposed to the flexible pipe in the N14.
The noisemaker is eliminated in the N18.
The N18 intake airbox base is slightly different (the JCW intake won't fit because the mounting screws don't line up).
The N18 oil dipstick is different (and many would say a step backwards in usability)
The Sport Button adds "pop and burble" to the exhaust-

Plus the pop and burble sounds awesome!
I just traded my 2007 R56S in on a 2012 stage 1 JCW a few months ago. Diggin' it!-

Two different flavors in a similar shell. Some like both, some like one over the other...
It's getting old.
Besides, we are all going to have the 3rd Gen MINI to kick around soon.-

Classic owners don't like the R53.
R53 owners don't like the R56.
And R56 owners probably won't like the F56. Lol.
Either way, it's a MINI. We should all be happy we agree on that.Lol

Either way, they're both amazing cars and I'd drive either any day. But I like mine. Lol.
I do have to say, the R53 clutch is so much nicer than the R56 squishy clutch. -__--

The sad thing is I went home trying to work a nice used one into my budget! Hahah. If only it didn't snow in Central PA... Lol. Next fund goes to the Audi Quattro. Lol.
Paul had a good point though. I should invest in a R53 and make it a trackrat.Just leaves me with a pointless R56 JCW... Lol. Oh well. Too late now! Hahah.
