See the November 2010 Central Coast Mini Cooper (CCMC) calendar for detailed information on our Saturday 11/06/10 drive up Hwy 1 to Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd and then across Nac-Ferg Rd to Mission San Antonio within Fort Hunter Leggett. Then back down Hwy 101.

We will start from Orcutt at 9:00 AM for Santa Barbara county people and from San Luis Obispo at 10:00 AM for SLO county people. We should be back in SLO by 4:30 PM and back in Orcutt by 5:15 PM.

I have always wanted to do this run  Is the road across bumpy? It looks bumpy in spots on Google earth.

I have not been on this road for a few years but I think there are a few spots that are still gravel. But if you take it slow and easy the view of the PACIFIC OCEAN makes it well worth it.
Also make sure you have current INS, REG, and Drivers Lic. They will ask to see these when entering the military base. Also dont have anything in the car that you wouldnt want to be found in a random search at the gate. I'm just saying!!!!!! lol
I will be leaving from Paso. If there are any other No county ppl let me know and we can meet up and head over.

I have not been on the road in about 15 years so it will be an adventure. Last time I was on the road was in a lowered bug and we made it OK. I remember mud and dirt in some corners that was a little exciting. I suspect there will be a few rocks to dodge.
The road is paved all the way. I do not think the road will be too bumpy. I hope not because my car is pretty stiff and not fun on bumpy roads.

I have run Nacimiento Fergusson Road several times over the last 8 years of owning MINI's and it is quite a road on the PCH side. Hopefully the weather will be clear for you as you can get some great pics of the Pacific as you go up the hill. SCMM last ran it this spring from Fort Hunter Liggett towards PCH with about 20 MINI's. Besides a few corners with some dirt and rocks, you need to be careful about the wet leaves on the road in the shady corners - bad traction!! :eek6: And also, you must cool your speed once you get on the base property. Have a fun and safe run!!

Roads were GREAT!. No problems at all. I could see how it might get a little hairy after a heavy rain though.

I will travel this again and again in the MCS

    Thanks for posting the photos.

The Nacimiento-Fergusson Road was much better than I expected.
It was paved all the way. The pavement was good, smooth (a few slighly rough areas), and well maintained with no potholes. Highway 1 was in worse condition than Nacimiento-Fergusson. There were a few small rocks to avoid and tarantulas walking across the road to avoid. Some corners had leaves that would be slick if wet. Everything was dry for our drive. I think there was one or two corners that had a little water running across the road, out of a zillion corners.

We did not catch any cars going our direction until we were on base property where we followed the speed limit anyway. We had about 10 cars and about 50 motorcycles go by the other direction, all going relatively slow. It was a large touring bike group (not sport bikes) just cruising.

There is no center line on the road but the road is about 1 3/4 lanes wide. Wide enough for on-coming cars to pass with a slowdown and a little caution. Thus you do have to drive with a little caution at blind corners.

The rest of our drive was also pretty good. We headed north up Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo. We stopped for lunch at Sabastian's in San Simeon. We had great sandwiches. Drove up Hwy 1 to Nacimiento-Fergussion Rd. The Hwy 1 drive was beautiful but a little slow following other cars. Mission San Antonio De Padua was very interesting and well worth the stop.

All and all a great road and good adventure.

Attached is a google map image of Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd from CA-1 (Hwy 1) to Fort Hunter Leggett. It is about 16 miles of very twisty road from Hwy 1 to the edge of Fort Hunter Leggett (right edge of image). It was basically 1st and 2nd gear all the way with many very tight turns. It was like a long Auto-X track.
