I run 215/45/17's. Plenty of room.

:cornut: I have 215/45/R17s on Margi(08 R56 MCS/JCWm) and no problems at all. I'd say to you though that checking with 'the Tire Rack' on line is an excellent way to get tire info. They'll ask you what kind of driving(race/street/both), what part of the country, what your car is and whether; Cooper/MCS/and/or JCW and your price bracket. They''ll then give you several excellent choices based on your answers. Don't try to pin them down on a single brand as they feel that that's not exactly fare to all the manufacturers .
Good Luck!

For me the 205-50-16 is the sweet spot for a 16 inch rim on my MINI. Your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't suggest going bigger AND wider. I got 205/55/16s put on by mistake (wanted 205/50s) and I just lived with it. They felt too bulky and spongy with the extra sidewall. Also acceleration suffers from increased diameter. The more tire you add, the more weight you have to turn as well. It affects the nimbleness of the car.

I like the 205/50/16combination when I run 16s.
Currently I put a set of 205/55/16 Yokahama WDrive Snowtires with some new rims and tires I picked up for a song from one of our MINI owners who dropped his lease.
I like the little bit more clearance with the 205/55 since I run TSW R56 lowering springs. The ride is ok, but no track days on these.
