Story and more pic's BMW 1-series M Coupe (2011) first official pictures | Automotive & Motoring News | Car Magazine Online All I gotta say is......ouch!
Remove the "M" and the fender looks like something off an Evo. Same engine as a z4? I thought M's were supposed to be special. It's a shame that BMW is moving towards shared parts even for their M division.
Ummmm....certainly a lot going on underneath those kidney grills and why "1- Series M coupe" and not "M1"?
M1 is an iconic moniker used by the first car produced by BMW Motorsport. Originally released in 1978. The current 1 Series does not spring from this linage. The original M1. Frankly, giving this 1 Series Coupe an M designation is pure marketing. If one was to follow the manner in which BMW names cars this really should be a 135iS.
I remember first seeing that car. Must have been July '79, or so. I've been in the US all of 3-4 months. It was parked in parking lot of Alpha Beta market on the corner of Fairfax and Santa Monica in West Hollywood. It was red and I remember admiring the cooling fins on the rear diff.
Yeah, seems like BMW is diluting its M brand in the same way GM did with Chevy's SS marquee. I knew that cache was gone once I saw it on the side of an S-10 truck.
One might consider that at 335 HP for the 1-series M coupe Jan has gotten 50 additional HP and 50 foot pounds of torque from a tune on the twin charge six.....
I think this thing is exactly what I think of when I think M. The SUV's they are maknig are a joke and the current M3 has become so bloated it has to have a V8 to match the prior generation performance. If you have driven a 135 you will know that it is not power it needs it is suspension work that thing understeers so bad it is hard to believe it is rear wheel drive. I do agree the price is just plain silly.
It's still $60k+ for a 1-series. You can get so much better for the same price range. The guys/gals that buy these new will do so because they want an "M" 1-Series. I don't get why they didn't call this one the "Tii"...
BMW is losing it.....they must think they are competing with Masarati or something with those prices. To be fair they actually say it "starts" at $45k, but we all know how BMW works, just add $20k on that  You can get a Ford SHO, with almost identical numbers, yes I know it may not feel like a BMW? But for almost $30k less, and not being able to pull away at a stop light..... But then if you get a BMW you get their wonderful.......worthless maintenance warranty :blush2: Actually you get 30 more ponies with the Ford
43-49 for the car, new suspension, wider stance, M3 rear posi diff, plus a whole lot more. Seems to me your missing what I've seen on the BMW-M site. May be time to get rid of the GP. :yesnod:
Gabe (of MotoringFile) has a bunch of articles and podcast about the 1M at his other site BimmerFile: http://www.bimmerfile.com/
Agreed - the suspension is almost totally lifted straight from the M3. The MINI's should have taught us that ultimate power is not the end all.
BMW needs to make up their minds... Are they building sports cars or luxury cars? They go halfway in both directions and get a mediocre ride with mediocre handling for a really steep price. Stupid. MINI's rule.
