So I have started enjoying this new hobby....... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cascades-Model-Yacht-Club/230922306955039 I am now the owner of 2 model racing sailboats. Sheesh and I thought modding the MINI was a money pit......:biggrin5:
Cool. LMK when you move on to the ship-in-a-bottle building. I'll keep you in steady supply of working medium.
It's been a lot of fun. For me it is a very nice way to take a couple of clicks out of the stress-o-meter on the weekends.
The smaller boats are around $100 w/o a radio ($30 and up). The larger Vela's are around $300 inc. a radio. The smaller on comes as a almost ready to sail kit. Takes about 3-4 hours to put together. Most of that time is involved with the rigging and sails. The Vela comes about 95% complete, only have to do a little rigging attaching and keel work.
Cool. When I go over to Elon U. with my girls to see soccer games, attend camps, etc., I've seen folks having regattas on a small pond there on campus with these boats.
Well at least it's a small boat, so it's only a small hole in the water to throw money into :biggrin5: As a bonus, it's probably the only boat you can fit in your MINI too! Are they as hard to sail as RC airplanes?
It has been my experience, that RC airplanes tend to sink, rather then sail, when they come in contact with water, Rae. Jim
Raced RC Off -Shore boats for several years....7 cell class....a small hole in the water that accepts large amounts of money!!!
I've been racing RC sail for about 14 years now. I was on the BOD of the AMYA as region 1 director for several years. Raced everything from the Soling 1M to the Wheeler and have held regional and National championships in a few classes. Down to 9 boats now from quite a few more. The higher end boats are amazing to sail and completion can be very intense in the championships as people will travel from around the world to compete. A few pics... Some of my International 1Ms Winning the region 1 champs in this Wheeler Racing IOMs Racing my J boat at Mystic. 80" long! Racing Stars (45") at Mystic. Sometimes full size boats get caught in traffic. Setting sail
Really cool. Just what I need... something else to distract me from everything that has already distracted me.
Very cool Greg. This is really turning into a very fun and satisfying hobby. Not sure I will get to the point of traveling around to different regattas, but do enjoy getting together with the other local sailors.
Wrong questions! The only valid question is: Will it explode when you put a (insert tuner name here) brand tune on it or mount a Sprintex supercharger?
I know with RC planes, the loss/damage rate was fairly high. How about the sail boats, as in sinking and such? Jim
Hopefully no sinking as the boats are either wood, ABS, or fiberglass. And they are pretty water tight on the deck fittings. So far the boats I have seen are really stout and can take a fair bit of rough handling. But as the speeds are fairly low and they are very maneuverable, collisions so far haven't been a problem.......:fingerscrossed:
