It's been a lot of fun. For me it is a very nice way to take a couple of clicks out of the stress-o-meter on the weekends.

How much does one of those things run?

The smaller boats are around $100 w/o a radio ($30 and up). The larger Vela's are around $300 inc. a radio.
The smaller on comes as a almost ready to sail kit. Takes about 3-4 hours to put together. Most of that time is involved with the rigging and sails. The Vela comes about 95% complete, only have to do a little rigging attaching and keel work. -

Cool. When I go over to Elon U. with my girls to see soccer games, attend camps, etc., I've seen folks having regattas on a small pond there on campus with these boats.

Well at least it's a small boat, so it's only a small hole in the water to throw money into :biggrin5:
As a bonus, it's probably the only boat you can fit in your MINI too! Are they as hard to sail as RC airplanes? -
I've been racing RC sail for about 14 years now. I was on the BOD of the AMYA as region 1 director for several years. Raced everything from the Soling 1M to the Wheeler and have held regional and National championships in a few classes. Down to 9 boats now from quite a few more. The higher end boats are amazing to sail and completion can be very intense in the championships as people will travel from around the world to compete.

Really cool. Just what I need... something else to distract me from everything that has already distracted me.

Very cool Greg. This is really turning into a very fun and satisfying hobby. Not sure I will get to the point of traveling around to different regattas, but do enjoy getting together with the other local sailors.

Wrong questions!
The only valid question is: Will it explode when you put a (insert tuner name here) brand tune on it or mount a Sprintex supercharger? -

Hopefully no sinking as the boats are either wood, ABS, or fiberglass. And they are pretty water tight on the deck fittings. So far the boats I have seen are really stout and can take a fair bit of rough handling. But as the speeds are fairly low and they are very maneuverable, collisions so far haven't been a problem.......:fingerscrossed:

Sinking happens, but it's kinda rare. The boats are pretty quick when the wind is good so if they do collide they can definitely get damaged.
Here is a video of an international champ IOM race. You can see how quick they go on a run (downwind). The biggest question I always get is what kind of motor does it have. No motors! Just wind power the only things you control are the sails and rudder. Fine tuning is a must.
These boats are so well designed that many full size race boats take the designs for themselves, as do the Americas Cup boats.
