Welcome to MA!
I would start with the sensor. I have seen bad oil pressure sensors do this on all marks. The last one was my wife's Toyota. Her gage would go to 0 at idle. If you have kept the oil changed and not ran it out of oil, more then likely it is not anything big.

First, welcome to the best MINI forum on the internet. Second, I am not a tech, nor do I try to play one on the internet. With that said, I think your problem is caused by a bad oil pump, bad rod, journal, or cam bearings. Or a long shot, a bad sensor. I hope someone will tell me I'm full of 'it'...

Welcome to M/A! Could your problems arise from all that salty air?

Besides which, my cast iron tools (table saw, drill press, lathe etc) are fine.
While in deep southern Texas, my tools would rust over night so I'd guess the air quality was pretty good around here.
