Most likely not from mileage , but from age yes. The seal can deform overtime and cause a slight leak enough to trigger a check engine light.
Happens on new cars as well.

Welcome to M/A! Hummmph...VINTAGE CAR? Ohhhhh...the agony [says the guy with TWO '06 Vintage Cars and a "caveman era" '03 Cooper].
I have never had an issue with a MINI gas cap leaking...I make sure it "clicks". However, some other cars I have owned [before my MINIs] had problems and the dealers always told me it was because the caps were not fully twisted on. So, I try to make sure the caps are always "on tight". -
