Speaking as one who spends quite a bit of time at the dog park, and on occasion rents a Prius, I'd say it's about even...
...but I do like diesels, drove them for 25 years, I like the concept of compression ignition...

Last diesel I owned was a 7.2 in my F250 for towing the Alfa Romeo to races. It got the job done.
I have driven a few in Europe, they actually do quite well and love the low end torque to move along, which is about all you can do on the small roads around the UK, Norway and France.

You can get back the extra tax spent on diesel fuel. That lowers the per gallon cost.
