I generally equate the amount of smoke with the amount of carbon being burnt off. There is zero science in that believe, it's just how I figured it worked.

I put around half a can in the vacuum line. I am by no means an expert on seafoaming... I have heard from a couple of people that doing multiple seafoams can be beneficial if you haven't done one in a while.

Hey Jim; Is the MINI still under factory warranty?
Dr O touched on it as a possible issue with the HPFP. Seems BMW has some issues with them going out. It shows up on some MINI forums and even Peugeot forums as having problems with the HPFP. Your symptoms sound similar. MINI may try to blame it on poor gas, but BMW & MINI seem to have a problem here. One more thing for you to check out.

Thanks, will that show a code? I will be due for service very shortly and will bring this up.

I couldn't answer that question in depth, but should be. I did a web search, and several forums talk about a software up-grade applying to the HPFP. Practically everything on this engine is somehow monitored by the ecu. I would sure bet that fuel pressure is defiantly one of them.
So, do you use top tier gas at the recommended octane?

I use Shell when I can get it and Exxon the rest of the time, all 93. With a tank and a quarter of fresh gas (as in after the tank with the sea foam in it) things are starting to get back to normal. Not completely there, but better then it has been.

It' looking more like the MINI just didn't like that you put the seafoam in the gas.

You may want to try and clear any codes before you take it in to the MINI dealer for service. If not, they may question you about what went into your gas tank. The owners manual specifically states not to add any gas additives. No sense messing up your warranty.

Thanks. I guess I got caught up in the Sea Foam posts and thought I was doing a good thing.

I'm thinking you were doing a good thing. But only put it in the PCV hose going to the intake manifold, and not the gas tank. Heck, the MINI will start throwing codes if you don't use the correct octane. It wasn't sure what it was ingesting, so there are safe guards built in to react accordingly.

This rather interesting and I am not sure what to make of it, considering the problems we discussed above. I put my third tank of fresh gas in and started home on a two and a half hour freeway / back road trip. As I said in another thread, I watch my MPG and my one time best was 123 to the first ligh and 108 to the second light on the guage. This time I went 133 to the first and 113 to the second. :confused5: At any rate, I'm not putting Sea Foam in the tank ever again. :nonod:
