I'm going to have Foggie hauled to the dealer on Monday, but just thought I'd toss it out in case there were any thoughts.

Last week she was cranking a bit slow on start up, but started and ran fine. Last Saturday all I got was flickering lights when I pushed the starter. Battery is 5+ years old, so no brainer. Put in a new one on Sunday and all was fine. All week, she started very strong. This morning (Saturday again) nothing but the lights flickering.

So, could it be the charging system, alternator, or she doesn't like Saturday? :D

I hope it is an easy fix for you. I wondering if there is a bad ground or positive connection at the started. I don't think it is Saturday, mine doesn't like Monday's.

Can you push start Foggie? If so does she run OK?

You can run it down to a Autozone they can check the charging system and the starter. If the starter is pulling to much amperage it can where down the battery.

Don't the batteries in these newer MINIs need to be coded when they installed?

If I understand the reasoning behind this it goes like so.

As the battery is "worn out" it take more and more to keep ti charged. The computer keeps track of this and sends more juice to the battery as it gets "worn out". Installing a new battery flummox's the system causing the charging system to send too much juice to the new battery that doesn't need as much to keep a full a charge.

It's not all MINIs that need coding after a battery change. 1st Gen MINIs do not need this. As I understand this process not all 2nd Gen MINIs need it either. They started this in the past few years I seem to remember.

Be nice to get something definitive on this matter.

    According to "B"......

    Battery registration:
On vehicles fitted with intelligent battery sensor (IBS), you need to register the replacement battery to the vehicle with the MINI scan tool. Without new battery registration, odd electrical system behavior and electrical system faults may result....

Straight out of the Wiring Diagram Service from BMW/MINI

    Registering the battery replacement

    Why register the battery replacement?

After fitting a new battery, the service function 'Register battery replacement' should be run. Registration of the battery replacement is necessary to notify the power management (software in the engine electronics and intelligent battery sensor) that a new battery has been fitted in the vehicle.

Without registration of the battery replacement, the power management does not run properly and this can lead to function limitations, for example reduction or deactivation of individual consumer units.

    Register battery replacement

This function informs the power management in the DME/DDE of a battery replacement. The following operations are performed:

The current kilometre reading is stored for the battery replacement.
The stored measured values (battery charge statuses, current, voltage, temperature, etc.) are deleted.

    The power management is initialised.

Replacing the battery: other battery capacity or AGM battery

As the battery depends on the engine ands options fitted, the following information is coded in the CAS:

Battery capacity (for example 90 Ah)

Battery type: AGM battery or lead-acid battery.

In the case of battery replacement, in general the battery capacity used as series standard may be used.

On installation of a battery with higher or lower capacity or installation of an AGM battery, Progman must be used to recode the CAS:

With Progman, run the retrofit â€Battery†(select battery capacity of the fitted battery).

Register additional battery replacements with this service function.

This is a post from the site you linked Nathan. As long as you don't have the IBS nanny & Foggie likely doesn't then no coding needed. :D

Grab your slippers and head for the garage...

If you have a plastic box as part of the negative cable clamp that attaches to the battery... You gots one...

If your negative battery clamp looks like it's missing a plastic box.... You don't have the nanny...

All across the country... Slippers are slipping on.... Heh heh heh...:D
