Stopped at Best Motor Werks and had Anson take a listen to the noise the vacuum pump was making. He told me that it's working just fine and that my car is probably the quietest running Mini they have had in the shop, lol. He did tell me that if it gets louder it will need to be replaced pretty quickly. So hopefully that will give me a little time to save a little extra to buy the part and not have to rush. So I'll probably order one soonish and just go ahead and change it before it becomes a problem.
John and Anson were awesome and I really appreciate them squeezing me in when they were so busy. Thanks guys.

I would still get the problem diagnosed..... The MINI engine, unlike other engines, needs to generate the vacuum via this pump....
What has me wondering.... The vacuum pump just sits there being driven off the exhaust cam. It's connected by a "tongue and groove" joint.... The idle jumping around has me wondering if it's not timing or tensioner issues.... Ala... loose chain.... That possible loose chain can be causing the idle bouncing around..... If the exhaust cam is jerking.... It could be creating the clatter you hear in the vacuum pump connection...
Anyway.... Just my $0.02 worth of internet mechanic analysis....
Long story short.... Don't bork your engine.... But make sure you know what's causing the problem and not the symptom....
Just seems premature for the vac pump to be going on a 2010 MINI..... Especially when the timing chain has been a real "go around" known issue.....-

Just checked oil level, it's a tad over the full mark. So it's def not caused by an oil leak.

Is it constant tapping? if so you can get a screwdriver and put your ear to the handle and put the point on different parts of the motor to find where its coming from. used a long screwdriver and be careful.

Well that sounds good, I have no other ideas maybe some of the R56 can help you out.

Has your chain tensioner ever been replaced? You have a 2010, and it may or may not have the improved tensioner.... The dealer can tell you with the VIN....
MINI claimed to have fixed this problem several times over the spread of the early model years.... Not sure when they start using the improved one in production....
If it's not getting pumped up with oil pressure, you could have extra slack in the chain.... Could be the ticking...... Just thinkin out loud.... -

If you do the screwdriver stethoscope on the passenger side of the engine and identify where the noise is coming from. That's where the timing chain is located.... The tensioner is pressurized by oil pressure.... The fuel injectors are also noisy.... You need to locate where the ticking is originating....
The tensioner.... if the old style.... May be replaced at N/C by the dealer.... If not, it's an easy DIY and the part cost is around $40.00 if I remember correctly...
But locate the noise first.... -

So if I am just suddenly hearing the injectors clicking, that would just be along the top/back of the engine about where the injectors come in. Ill try to check it tonight, but after work I gotta go out to a funeral. So I may not get the opportunity to report back this evening.

That's what is making the noise. Front right hand side of the engine.

Engine is about $7,000. Don't know how much the vaccuum pump costs. My MINI is an R53 & doesn't have one.
Call John over at Best & ask him. He should be able to give you a ballpark estimate. -
