Steve... I received the Hella Supertones I ordered via Amazon. A relay is included in the clamshell. Would you say the Supertones are louder than the OEM horns? I've been listening to soundclips and it sounds "tinny"... I'm looking for "deep sounding" horns... I'm going to clean the OEM connectors to see if it improves the current sound from the OEMs.... I'm so tired of trying to find replacement horns... >.<
Ok...so I just went outside to record how my OEM horns sound, and as luck would have it, they are working & they are LOUD! erg. Still debating on whether I should return the aftermarket horns (Wolo Bad Boy 419 & the Hella Supertones) and just wait for the OEM ones to completely die. double erg. I've heard Aaron's horn setup in person and I would gladly pay someone to duplicate that system on Schultze. (sigh)
The Hellyeah horns would be considered more of a European sounding horn. More high pitched attention getting to cut through traffic noise. One thing I'm not necessarily comfortable with is to simply plug in the horns to the OEM wiring. One thing needs to be compared are the amp draw for the two sets. I suspect the Hella draw more current than the OEM. Then a OEM wire size needs to be verified to determine the amps they can handle. It's possible to run the Hella on undersized wiring, you just won't get the full benefit. If the wires are undersized it's simple to connect a new relay activated by to OEM horn wires, you would just need to run one new fused 12 volt wire of a heavier gauge to power the higher amperage horns. But of course this needs to be verified first.
The fact there's a relay says at least one thing is different, and that makes me wonder what else might have changed, though I also wonder whether maybe that's a better kit than the one I got. Mine works great though without a separate relay so who knows? As to the sound, that's one of those subjective things that's hard to characterize. I definitely wouldn't characterize mine as tinny. I just checked out the sound clip at the Griot's Garage though (scroll down to "product information" and "honk the horn") and if that's the sort of thing you're finding elsewhere I can understand why you'd be wary. That clip makes them sound like crap! NOTHING like mine sound. I honestly can't figure out why Griot's would put up that clip because I can't imagine anyone buying them after listening to it. I suppose they might have changed the horns and now they sound like that but I doubt it. Mine have a hard edge to the sound but that's pretty much it on as far as anything sounding tinny, and apparently it's intentional. Hella's description fits pretty well: "Disc horns make a relatively hard sound which is radiated mainly forwards. This achieves good penetration of the traffic noise over a great distance. The sound pattern works best as a set with one high tone horn and one low tone horn." Are they louder than the OEM? Yes. Can't say how much though. Like many who've commented, I rarely use my horns. I didn't know one of mine was gone until I honked one day and it sounded weak...didn't know the other one was gone until I tried to honk much later and got nothing at all. So, I didn't get around to hearing the Hellas until well after I had both stockers working, plus it's been years since I made the switch. I remember thinking the Hellas would definitely attract more attention but can't make a relative comparison. If I run across another Mk1 MINI in the next few days I'll see if I can get the owner to let me park next to him so we can compare.
I listened to the soundclip on Hella's website, too...sounds "tinny" there, as well. It would be easy if someone in the local club here in Hampton Roads was running Hellas so that I could hear them in person.
Don't forget high frequencies are more likely to be absorbed by installation location (That is why all you hear is bass when a loud stereo drives by). This may make the bench sound be different from an installed sound. FWIW the red Italian Horns on Griots sounds like mine does.
I have a Wolo Bad Boy installed, through a relay activated by a horn lead and both the OEM horns. This setup has saved me a couple of times from other vehical operators crashing into me.. Note* did not say "DRIVERS" Love the LOUD sound.
Hmmm.... I'm in DESPERATE need of a road trip...Google Maps says I'm 4 hours south of you... Seems that Steve is somewhere in MD, too... Would LOVE to see/hear your setup. Did you do your own install?
 Yup, that's a sure sign of desperation! I know what it's like though. When I was shopping for speakers for my home music system I couldn't find locally most of the models I wanted to listen to before choosing so I bought a bunch of them to try out side by side (used, so cheap, off craigslist & ebay) before making up my mind. Then I started selling them off...that's a work in progress. Back to the Hella sound, I've listened to sound clips the last couple days and I don't get it. They sound tinny to me too. Either they changed the design, the audio/video captures don't do them justice, or they really sound that way when you're out in front of a car with them installed. Maybe what I hear from beside the car when I reach in and push the horn button isn't what you hear from some distance out front of the car? (grasping at straws to understand the odd sounds I'm hearing online)
I'm no audiophile, but it seems to me that every clip I have ever heard that folks have posted have not had a real world sound to them. :confused5:
:idea::idea: We need to have some kind of "event" at next year's MOTD which will feature MINIs with aftermarket horn setups! Of course an OEM setup for each model would be on hand so people could hear the difference. I absolutely LOVED Aaron's setup and I think Paul (Blimey) has a similar setup, too! As I've said many times, I would GLADLY pay someone to install something similar on Schultze. There are some $#!*^)!$#% crazy drivers in VA! Literally every daily commute is an obstacle course slash endurance run!
I remember, I lived in the Hampton Roads area for almost 4 years. My commute was about 20 miles each way from the north end of Newport News (north of Fort Eustis) to Langley AFB.
If done just right, any time I need to use the train horns, it would actually propel me forward with a bit of air boost!:devil::devil::devil:
Getcha one of these..... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prTgk2yyr_E&feature=relmfu]Doran Cunningham 6B echo..... - YouTube[/ame]
Actually, last night I stumbled across his video collection on You Tube...the first one I played was the NASA Resonator...Dozer (my bulldog) was NOT a happy guy when he heard it! It was SO LOUD that I could "feel it" in MY chest! :eek6:
Horn Where are you located? Yes I did my own install, made up a bracket and installed the bad boy air horn behind the drivers side wheel well. Oh it's plenty loud.
