Also, what brand filter were you using ?
I am confused now, b/c my MINI does not have that guide tube... Maybe mine being an 03, has something to do with it ?

It's an '02 and the filter was OEM. Oil (Red Line) changed at ~5K miles.

Well, it doesnt seem normal that the filter stuck to it the way yours did, but now i am concerned about mine.
NVM. Guess thats the difference between a just-a's oil filter housing and an S until the facelift. SSheewwww, was slightly scared for a moment there. -

If I was new to not only this canister type filter change but oil changes in general I might have tossed the filter with the guide still attached. It felt like it was permanently bonded on there. I can see how someone might even compare it to a new OE filter and decide it was just from a different manufacturer and built differently since the OE filters have a plastic structure down the core.

The Bentley manual diagram looks almost identical to this one from realoem:
Still wondering whether others have had this stuck guide/filter thing happen, but I guess I'm talking to a much smaller crowd than I thought..... -

Well i am not certain that is the case. I too opened my Bentley up to see if there were any notes about it, but nothing... I came to the conclusion after visiting a site that has real photos of the product thats listed.

The R50 and the R53 have different oil filter canisters. (for those who don't know)
This used to happen to me every time with my wife's MC. What I did was to use a screwdriver to pry the filter off the cage. That way the cage did not separate from the canister.
And I too always used OEM filters - I saw posts back in 03 of people who used aftermarket filters that got crushed. No thanks. -
