The adapter plate can also be sourced from Moss Motors, i.e. mossmini.com. It is part of their oil cooler kit, but can be purchased individually. The part number is not listed, but a Moss tech will take care of you.

 

R53 (and R52 S) manual transmission cars have a water cooling circuit through the oil filter housing. Automatic transmission cars don't have this; instead, they have a water cooling circuit for the transmission. Oil cooler adapter plates are designed to work with the oil filter housing on the manual transmission cars (which is different).

It IS possible to replace the automatic oil filter housing with a manual one, with the integral cooler, then use this to install an oil cooler adapter plate and a cooler. It's not trivial, but it's possible.

However, no one really needs this. Because the automatic transmission cars are limited to a MUCH lower rev limit, and it can't be increased... the transmission automatically upshifts at about 6250, if memory serves. As a result, automatics don't generate high oil temps like the manual cars. I've driven an automatic first gen car as hard as ANYONE. I dare say, as hard as it CAN BE. And never had an issue with oil temps.

 

I beleive that Mini Mania sells just the plate for about $100.

 

Sneed's Speedshop has a oil cooler kit and I'm pretty sure Chris will sell just the adapter plate...

 

George at Mini Madness will sells his alone as well.

You can easily make one with some aluminum and copper or AN fittings and a jig saw. All for under 50 bucks.

 

Yep and George's is anodised red...got to be worth a couple more HP!!!

Slightly off thread topic, but

your thread and because you asked!
I run my own designed oil cooler system and OBERG oil filter. The two adapters are to bypass the factory oil filter and cooler. The system goes back through high pressure lines into a oil thermostat,controlled oil cooler/fan assemble back through an OBERG oil filter to the engine. The oil cooler fan is controlled by, temperature,boost, RPM and manual override. There are 3 temperature sensors and 2 oil pressure switches via a bus switch for component activation and monitoring via gauges or data logging devise. Needless to say I have a steady and constant oil temperature in most operating environments. The system has a oil pressure drop of -3/5 lbs at operating temperature and a consistent 180-185*degree temperature coming out of the sump and -175* cooled returned to engine.

hmm - mossmini no more.

I've been looking for an adapter plate that has the proper connectors for oil temp and oil pressure gauges but cannot locate that any longer. I think that's what Moss used to sell.

Perhaps I should just get the proper in-line AN T-connectors and go with an ebay cooler kit. They look ok, with all the proper parts, except none of these oil cooler kits (not even the $$$ kits at Way and other Mini vendors) come with a thermostat valve. I really don't want my oil cooler to do anything until it needs to cool, so no matter what I do, I will probably have to hack this whole setup myself from parts bought from various sources.

Low on my to-do list, but oil coolers are shiny

 

May I ask if there is a difference for this oil cooler adaptor plate between manual and auto transmission r53 cooper s?

Most aftermarket oil cooler I see for sale are stated with a disclaimer "this oil cooler will not fit minis with automatic transmission"

I'm looking to mod my stock oil cooler as well, sadly mine is an automatic. Not sure if there is any oil cooler which is suitable for my application.

 

And, it even works upside down!!! I've been looking at this mod for my R56. Expensive, but with my high mileage motor it sure can't hurt.

 

With all of the track days I have done I have never had a temp in the oil pan go above 120° C. Well within spec's for todays synthetic oils.
