I always give that O-ring a lick of grease. I've changed the oil on a few friends MINI's & the O-rings were like hard plastic. When touched they crumbled. I asked them when was the last time they had their oil changed. Turns out it was only 5,000 miles, but the flat rate guy at the dealer never bothered with a new O-ring. Oh man.....

 

got to lube those o-rings really well before reinstall. Based on the resistance of the cap during install, I feel motor oil alone doesn't always cut it in that position and use some light grease on the fresh ring instead.
