Only need one can with the R53. Check my gallery for some pic's.

And no need to spend a bunch on the can. I got mine off of ebay, got the hoses at my local parts place, and put some copper wool in the can to help with the moisture capture all to the tune of about $60.

You do need to make sure you have it plumbed correctly. You want the grey high vacuum line from under the IC to connect to the can and the can attached to the valve cover connection.

 

Chris' rally MINI is an R50 if that makes a difference.
