Take the modding as an enjoyable journey. If your budget allows, take it as a race. I'm for of the former. What direction are you headed? I suggest you check maintenance items & upgrade the known faulty ones to better aftermarket equivalents. Don't be scared, 1st gens are pretty easy to work w/.A few below:
-ATI super damper, a 15% reduction pulley & new belt. Throw in a good tensioner stop like WMW. A set of colder plugs like NGK BKR7Equp
-Powerflex front control arm, swaybar bushes
    -vibra-Technics upper engine mount
    -Canton or RMW coolant tank
    -Cravenspeed strut tower plates
-Power steering hose clamps best replaced as the old ones loosen & leak.
-Change all fluids. Note to use CHF11s only for power steering
-Check low speed & power steering fans
-Check for other leaks. Thermostat, crank position sensor O-ring

Then, start modding! Suspension, CAI, exhaust, wheels.....
    Again, enjoy the ownership!!!

A great paint alternative is Plasti Dip. I blacked out all the chrome pieces and wheels on my Mini. There are many different colors of Plasti Dip and you don't really have to worry about over spray. Check out Dipyourcar.com for the best prices. Let me know if you want any info on how to Plasti Dip and I will be glad to help you out.
