Dragon Parade: Friday, May 3 It was a good run, but there were a couple kinda scary issues this year: 1. Newbies (?) slowing WAY down in front of the photographers and almost causing accidents 2. Bicyclists - who, in their right mind, would ride a bike on the Dragon? Made for some interesting driving, but it was still a BLAST!
I didn't quite get the reason for slowing down for pics. It annoyed me. My thoughts were the same as yours for the bicyclists. Crazies I tell ya!
The dragon ,makes apart of a beautiful scenic loop with the cherohala skyway, and this loop is actually a major bicycle event later in the year. Nine times out of ten, you ride through the dragon, you'll only encounter a couple of cars, especially if you ride through early in the morning hours. It's one of very few roads that's actually twisty enough to enjoy the turns at bike speed (13-17 mph uphill, 28-50 downhill).
If you drive by the photographers slow you A) Do NOT stand a chance of getting caught with your wheels on or over the yellow line and get eaten alive on the nets for weeks. B) Get more pictures to chose from later, because they can take more shots. C) Nobody can tell how fast you were going in a still picture. Jim
We just bought our first mini 7 wks ago while on vacation. Took me 2 yrs to talk my husband into trading his mustang GT but now he's glad he listened to me. We attended the MOTD and learned a lot about our mini and meet the nicest people on the planet. Even tho it rained, we had a blast! Nathan, I'm the short woman in line with you for cake at the farewell dinner and you told me about your zippered hoodies . I hope you get them again so I can get one and maybe one for hubby.
Another MOTD in the books, had a great time meeting a lot forum members, save the elusive Dave O! Next year my friend we'll have a beer or two! Thanks to Snooter for another great year and all the volunteers who helped pull it off!
MOTD 2013 is over and in the can. Made it home in just over 12 hours with stops for fuel (both me and the Hand-basket). Looking forward to MOTD 2014. At the overlook on Friday morning. Thanks Barry for another great job!!
This would be easier to carry, but might take you awhile to clear the road. Jim Amazon.com: Chainmate CM-24SSP 24-Inch Survival Pocket Chain Saw With Pouch: Patio, Lawn & Garden
made it home in the rainy weather with no issues. Ready for next year. It was great seeing everyone and hope to see yall again next year. Hopefully everyone will be back, including those that did not make it (Justa Jim) this year.
Wow, what a drive home. Normally takes about 7 hours, today was 9.5!. That rain was relentless. I've never had so many ass pucker moments in such a short amount of time. I'm whipped...event post mortem from me tomorrow.
It was an interesting ride up the Dragon this morning on worn out GP2 Khumo's! My wife was ready to beat me if she could've left go of the oh &%$# bar. Going through Knoxville felt like we were skating on ice. We went up 81 to 77 to Ohio and ran out of the rain just east of Knoxville we had good running that way.
First time on The Dragon I was focused on staying on my side. But as I got comfortable with my new coilovers and sway bar keeping me stuck to the road I pressed my MINI harder. At one point my stomach did flip-flops...but my MINI held! As I drove faster I felt the corners of my mouth turning up until I realized I had a maniacal grin on my face. Will look to go back and spend more time outside Fontana. There is LOTS more worth doing there other than The Dragon (IMHO).
More pics that I didn't have the time or bandwidth to upload before. A slightly overheated shift box cover. Zombies came to see the MINIs Dave.0 Action Shot Chad has the best collection of socks....
