I just resolved a P0171 on my Mini last weekend. It was the rear O2 sensor.
Pulled it and it was fouled pretty bad.

    Replaced both. Not cheap.

But the code is gone and it's running smoother than it's run since I bought it!

Don't know if you checked YouTube for this code. Lots of info.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujt56nnw-2k"]Here's a good one that shows how to diagnose/troubleshoot it.[/ame]

    Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Jerry. I had started to have a suspicion of it being an o2. In theory it shouldn't be the secondary since the only reason for it is to measure a catalyst deficiency. I think my primary one is going though. Was going to swap them around and clear the code and see what happens. I'll update which my finding!

    So bumping this.

P0171 has been finally solved. Torn diaphragm in my DT BPV. It was graciously repaired and is back on the car. Still mostly functions as it did with the light on, but the light is now off, has been for 3 tanks of gas, and there are no pending codes. Big thanks to Chad and TJ for taking care of that without hesitation!
