Machine shop said he head is true.

Block looks good and there is no evidence of leaks in the head gasket.

Aha! So it's the stock cam that's the problem! Now I have an excuse for my wife--this is no longer a performance issue, but a safety issue! It must be swapped out at once....:D

Good to see the head held up though. Keeps it as an option if Jan ever comes this way.
Doesn't look like anyone is coming this way anytime soon though.

If you are joking fine but if you are concluding than you may be mistaken?

How does the cam become the problem? It doesn't.. period!

The assumption that because these damaged parts showing during this inspection is by no means a conclusive time period when they started to go bad. The aliment of the rings as an example does not happen commonly in the first place and in documented cases it is over a period of several hundred to thousand miles or hours on the engine. None of the pictures or text indicate an event of instant engine failure. I believe that the MINI was still being run during the questions of power loss? And even if it were not the picture of the valve alone shows mileage.
Basically to conclude the quality, performance or reliability of any component in this thread is reading a lot into it.

It is not an compliment or promotional for any vendor or oem parts or products!

    Umm, yeah...

There is very obvious sarcasm to cct1's comment about the stock cam.

The sarchasm* is quite deep and wide on this one.

I guess I should update this...

Just after the July 4th holiday I got a call from the shop asking where to get a spring and retainer. Seems the machine shop misplaced one set while working on the head. Information supplied and parts are on the way, supposedly.

There are some other little things going on too now that I'm yet sure I am allowed to discuss yet, checking on that and will update.

I've not been pressuring the shop as of yet. They know I have a deadline to attend MITM/MTTS and they assure me it will be ready in time.

    Woh good luck Nathan.

That's why I use sealed egg cartons to house my cleaned keepers, top hats and springs. Nothing gets in and nothing gets out until assembly time...

    I've got

extra stock springs from when my head was done. I can check on retainers and keepers if you need them.

Or I know of a bitchen high RPM aftermarket spring kit! ;)

Thanks, I have a box of OEM, valves, springs, retainers and keepers here. These valves use a different set.

I just need to get out from being passive in all this and start driving it forward again. The must be sort of corollary that states something like: The time to taken to repair a modded car will take all time allotted no matter the complexity when long term deadline is granted to the repair facility.

Got the OK via text message....

Friday I picked up the Craven CAI from the shop and Saturday AM pulled the ECU out of the CAI to send to Mynes. I know ya'll have seen that there is data logging component of the Bytronics software that will allow up to 45 parameters to be captured on an SD card. The ECU needs a bit of code added that increases the frequency of the data capture over the OEM rate. The ECU is currently in the capable hands of the USPS winging it's way to Mynes facility to have this bit of coded added. When it comes back to me, hopefully quickly...hint hint Jay...the code will be in place along with the cable needed to plug in the SD card.

Thats the long winded version of "I'll be beta testing the software"

    In talking to Jay...

I just got really, really pissed at the BMW/MINI engineering team. The limited data rate out of the diagnostic port was a CHOICE by BMW/MINI that has no other effect other than making the data close to useless for serious diagnositcs and any type of feedback systems. To make matters worse, they chose to DELAY that data as well! All I can say is that they are f*ckers! Some bandwidth limits I can see cause the ECU has other stuff to do, but the delay is just pure malicious coding to screw the aftermarket!

Anyway, looking forward to hear what you find with all this wiz-bang stuff.

    Matt

And yes, every build/service takes longer than wanted, just like every budget exceeds funds available! ;)
