Yesterday I replaced the head gasket on my 03 MCS. All went well considering I have never done that before on a car like this and I didn't have a manual. The gasket between cylinder 1 and 2 had a hole in it. After everything was reassembled the car started and ran, but after about a minute or so the ses light came back on. The code reader said it was P0341 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circ Range/Performance. What exactly does that mean. I was careful to reassemble the camshaft back to the original (or at least I think it was).
Is there a way to test the timing to ensure it is correct?

Did you reattach the CPS plug? Maybe the lock on it slid shut before it was completely seated?

I am not very up on how to check the timing on an R53, but I did attach the BMW TIS doc on removing and installing a cylinder head. There are some details specific to timing.

Hopefully it will be of some help to you.

Nice info, seems like a good candidate that should be added to our library.

Need to check with my legal team on this as it is a BMW sourced document.

I have the December of 07 BMW TIS disk. It has "all" the service info for BMW and MINI vehicles manufactured before that date. There are thousands of those procedures for the various different vehicles.

Yea, adding it to the library might not be the best idea. The origin is rather sketchy.

So I have attempted to adjust the timing to no avail. I am not sure if I missed a link or not. But on the plus side I have become very skilled at taking apart and gaining access to the camshaft and can now do it in about an hour.

    Check the sensor wiring.

And the sensor seating. You disconnected it when you did the head job. See if someone local will let you swap it out to see if the code goes away. The ECU is saying that the reading from the sensor doesn't make sense. This could be that timing is out of phase, or it could be that it's reading sporadically.
