I was looking to add some more red accents to my Midnight Black exterior and came up with the idea of painting my scuttles red. I wasn't sure how it would look so I started first with Photoshop and I tinted the JCW Scuttles I had. I wasn't exactly convinced this was the way to go yet.

After much thinking I decided to take apart the stock scuttle and see what I could do with it. I got the first one apart successfully, but broke the second one after getting a little cocky thinking I knew how to separate them now.

This is how the ends looked
    [IMG]

I figured a thorough cleaning was needed, so I used some 91% alcohol
    [IMG]

    I dipped the broken ends
    [IMG]

Using some LocTite...actually relabeled super glue.

    Put the Activator on first
    [IMG]

    Gave it some time
    [IMG]

    Carefully reassembled the pieces
    [IMG]

    Ground the glue joints
    [IMG]

Then smoothed the seam with some Duplicolor putty
    [IMG]

Also roughened up the chrome a bit
    [IMG]

    Then sprayed Primer over everything
    [IMG]

    Looks great
    [IMG]

Used Krylon Gloss Paint in about 5 coats.

    Used Krylon Clear Coat Paint
    [IMG]

Lightly dusted using red paint first
    [IMG]

Added a new coat every 10 minutes
    [IMG]

Don't handle the parts for several days. I got impatient and wetsanded and buffed it and smudged the soft though seemingly dried paint.

Had to repaint it a couple of times.

Handle the parts too soon and you risk this
    [IMG]

So I sanded the bad parts down and resprayed
    [IMG]

    All finished!

Thanks everybody!!! Thinking of doing this to my steering wheel (this is my old wheel..I've got a JCW wheel now) next! Taking apart the MFSW assembly is very delicate though. I did it on my first gen, and broke one before I figured it out.

Nice! How did mask the "S" so well? Right down to the edges...

Well it's a 1 or 2 footer for sure, lol. I did my best but the problem began when I removed the masking. I couldn't handle the pieces when the paint was wet because I kept smudging it, so I couldn't remove the mask, and once it dried, removing the mask required me to cut with an Xacto to free it...so I just did my best.

Maybe next time I'd use some frisket or an easier to remove mask.
