I don't mean to sound stupid, but what's a pedal jack?

Why in the world would you use something like that? The MINI is one of the hardest cars to steal if you don't have a key.

 

You must live or work in a scary neighborhood.....

I seriously doubt the need for it, but you would know your 'hood......as to the device itself, looks sturdy, but I think it would be a PITA to use every day.

Is the idea to hold the brake pedal down or to make it unusable?

 

I think the real idea is to keep the brake from being accessed so an auto couldnt shift gears. Which is why is I believe he is asking about the manual. He probably wants to know if this will work on the clutch pedal with the same results.

 

They used to have these things for old carburated cars where everything is a mechanical linkage (1970's and early 80's)....up to early 2000's Honda Civics and Chryslers.

MINIs have drive by wire throttle control. It is unlikely your car can be stolen short of having it towed or being parted out (I've seen that happen to a Subaru WRX STI before). Your car's starter motor (if manual) will not start without you having a foot on the clutch pedal and if automatic, will need your foot on the clutch pedal AND that key of yours is big and bulky because it contains a computer chip in it that must match codes with the computer that's in your car. This is far more effective than a clunky bar you have to remove before you even get into your car.

You would use a device such as this if you have a much older car. Our MINIs are pretty safe without them. If you are looking for a deterrent in case of a casual thief, alarm stickers and maybe a blinking LED will service the same purpose.

 

My .02 is if someone wants your car no matter what make they are going to steal it. Just have insurance and lock the doors.. Like I said my opinion and everyone has one of those.

Off topic, but thanks so much for that website, I have used it so many times on projects, I can't even begin to count the number. Which isn't saying much, because I can't count that high to begin with, but still, awesome job!

If you ever decide not to host it anymore, PLEASE take Nate up on his offer, many of us would be permanently indebted to you. It's dead of winter right now, it's too cold for me to work on the car right now, as it is for many, so I suppose the number of "hits" is low. Come spring/summer/fall, I'll bet traffic goes up.

Seriously, your site has bailed me out so many times, many times in the middle of a big project, as I'm sure it has many others. Your site and the Bentley manual are "must haves" IMHO. There are many other people who feel exactly the same way too, so although you may not be getting much feedback, trust me, your site is well known and much appreciated by more than a few. I direct people there all the time.

I hope it's temporary, not permanent--if it's permanent, it would be wonderful if there was a way for Nate to take over hosting it, it's a resource I rely heavily on.

I used the old style that connected the steering wheel to the peddle on my VW convertible.

 

The domain is about to expire on 7/20. Hope there is nothing wrong with the owner of said domain. I've reached out in the past and offered to host them at no charge, reached out again today too.
