I did have the Alta CAI and the tube between the MAF and turbo and it actually lost about 15mph from my top speed. The CAI does sound nice but butt dyno gave me more power when I went back to the stock box.
Also, Jan of RMW has backed up my claim that cars make more power with the stock box (dyno proven). Mini has a great design, and one of the largest cold air feeds of any 4 cylinder car I know of.

The stock intake is a real cold air intake also. I just don't want to cut holes in my engine compartment to install a DoS intake. That, and the increased noise are my reasons for not getting one. I'll get a drop-in free flowing filter replacement, for now and maybe a JCW intake later.

A panel filter is a great place to start, as the OEM treated paper filter is quite restrictive. We actually have some on sale right now until next Friday.
High Performance Panel Filter for R55, R56, R57 MCS / JCW
Yes it's true, some folks don't like the audio component associated with the DoS CAI and that's OK. We actually have a plug (yes a cap) for the large CAI inlet that we'll be offering later this month.
With the cap removed for MINI Club Events, HPDE's, & track days, people the peak HP and torque increases that we have dyno tested, track tested, and advertise. With the cap installed, for around town driving, we're noticing improved low-end throttle response with only mildly lowered peak HP.
We've known for a long time that the R56 seems to get a major chubby for some restriction before the MAF at its low end, a major plus for the "drag racing" and spirited drive to work set. However, we've also found that with a well done ECU tune, some completely open element CAI's can lose peak HP for and torque for customers out in the real world. This is why we use a housing on our filter and have a velocity stack entering the clean air inlet tube to "form" the air and smooth its pathway into the MAF.

Spend you money on a rear sway bar, camber plates and a tune. After that a TSW Xbrace and a Turbo Back Exhaust. After that lowering springs/coilovers -

Tim Shackelford, seems like it's been forever.
How are you?

did the DIY CAI mod. I lost some fuel economy and it lost some of the low end torque. I reinstalled my oem air box and bought a K&N panel filter. My MPG and low end torque were back. I just have an opportunity to buy some used Alta components at a huge saving. I think I'll save my coin for some suspension components.
Thanks for the Feedback! AXO -

Cathy and I plan to go to MITM this year perhaps it won't be quite as nutty. Well from a install point of view I'm sure you would prefer nutty! -
Iam not happy with my Cai either..I have the DOS and also deleted the Noisemaker...Iam not sure if it is because i have a Auto that this thing has seemed to really kill my Torque or its just me...
Iam thinking about putting the Stock back on and see if i feel any difference... -
Let the engine breath out, do an exhaust, the best bang for your buck.
Ask about ours.
We didn't start out designing one but had to to get the aerodynamics right on the R53, plus we have an R56 and wanted to get rid of the restrictive factory exhaust.
