I agree it's not really about republican or democrat, both parties are greedy, disorganized and incompetent (not just borderline). I don't subscribe to the mean spirited because I sincerely believe politicians actually believe most of what they're doing is for some good, even if they have some strange rationalization of it.
I don't care about party, party lines are just so you can take a side and no from which direction you'll be taking fewer hits. If I'm any party its libertarian and I get the feeling that many others are too. I'm not in favor of government dictating much in the form of how I or anyone else should live, nor do I think the federal governments role entails much charity work. As we progress down from the federal government I become more socialistic in some ways. I feel states should be more empowered to take care of their own citizens, cities even more empowered, and that the individual is actually responsible for most of decisions of how sacrifices should be made. This is of course working under the assumption that humans are basically good, moral beings, and with some exceptions, they are. Greed only becomes a problem at higher and higher levels, the CEOs of corporations or politicians in higher ranking offices, since you can't completely eliminate greed you should eliminate the ability for greed to have much power, limit the size and scope of government and repeal practices and laws that protect large corporations and give them more power than individuals.

before Georgie got into stride in his 2nd term I considered myself middle of the road with republican leanings. I did vote for Obama because in my mind change had to happen. We were heading down the crapper fast. McCain in my mind was more of the same.

IF this was some alternate universe ala Star Trek and GW wore the label "Democrat" I woulda voted Republican last election.

By the same token if 3 yrs from now and Obama has really F'd it all up. I really hope he is successful. But if not I'd consider a Republican (assuming it's not Sarah Palin.....jeeessh)

Maybe I've read too many Robert Ludlum books but I believe 'political parties' like 'religeon' are the opiates of the masses. Where the real power lies I don't believe it really matters if you are "republican" or "democrat". It means nothing. Theres just money, power and greed for more of it.

Damn, I got one wrong and it was the oil imports question.
Embarassing, considering I teach a class on mineral deposits. :blush2:
