I've got pretty good internet up here in the Lodge, nothing down in the cabin. Cell phone coverage, AT&T, has been pretty much null and void all day.

    Back on topic....

Hope my phone works at Fontana...

I can tell you this... ATT didn’t have squat there. I didn’t even reception at the lodge where everyone else did (there and elsewhere)

That’s funny... I transferred my cell phone (business number) to my manager. I forgot to unforward it until I left. Once I got in range, my phone went nuts and left like 30 text messages at once.

But you’re right... it was nice not having to listen to anyone’s phone ring.

It was even funnier watching everyone walking around hunting for some area that would provide them with at least a "one or two bar" fix.

We would be sitting someplace talking and all of a sudden Mark would start jumping up and down yelling, "I have three bars, I have three bars", not that he was checking or anything.

So here is the deal with Fontana and interwebz coverage.

They have a T3 line that comes into the facility for the entire village. From that they have different zones with each having an allocation of the available bandwidth. Toss 800 or so net enabled devices all polling for a signal at the same time in the mix and no one gets anything decent.

As for me, I just embrace the fact that I'm pretty much off the grid for the time I am there and if I really have a pressing need I wait till really late at night when all the devices are not around the few hot spots.

I was just kind of surprised that they had cable but didn't offer internet throughout. (unless it was satellite)

Regardless, it was nice not even hearing a phone ring. (heard a few walkie talkies but no phones the entire time)

Yes no phones was nice. You don't realize what an intrusion they can be until none are there. Just the sounds of superchargers, blow off valves & farty exhausts. Sweet! :D

We stayed over at Nantahala. On the drive back each evening, as we got in range, the phones would sound like a Casino in Vegas. Missed calls, texts, ding, ding, ding. We didn't really mind not having service, since it made the time seem more relaxed, but it was nice to check in with the kids and the house/kennel sitter each night.

I went into Robbinsville once and when I got in range the phone lit up. I did a quick look, saw no one had died or was dying and put it back in my pocket. The little stuff on the site could wait...

A funny sight seen at the Dragon was all the people at the dam overlook talking on cell phones. Sort of a new age phone booth. From what I was told it was the only place ATT phones worked.

I'm not complaining at all. I sent my wife an email at 0730 and she got it around 1400, but she got it and that is what counted. It was kind of like a "launch & leave" missile. :D
