My film cameras also left me while they had some value. No one wanted my darkroom so I donated it to a friend of my niece.

I have one film camera that I hold onto for sentimental reasons, my Dad's Nikon FE & 50mm f1.4.

I don't stock a lot of gear. If it doesn't get used it gets sold off. Proud to say all my gear was bought used. No way I'll ever buy new again.

The image circle is different on the older glass. The EOS lenses have a wider body opening, which is also why Canon can have a 85mm f/1.2 and Nikon only gets a 85mm f/1.4 lens to work. On the turn side, my latest Nikon body can use a Nikkor F mount lens from the 1960s without a problem, meters like the latest VR lens, just need to tell the camera about the lens (preset).

The EOS stuff I used in the 1990s would still stand up to the modern versions minus the IS stabilization, which you can work around in most scenarios. My favorite lens for all around shooting at the time was the Canon EF 35mm-350mm f/3.5-5.6 L USM - even today on the used market not a bargain lens, but for 700 to 800 dollars it's a versatile pro lens for anything but marginal low light shooting.

On the other hand, the 5D has enough resolution that you can crop off your vingette circle and just stick with the lenses you have. The bigger issue is image quality - In general: glassless FD-EOS adapters will not let you focus to infinity, glass/lenses containing adapters are generally of poor quality. The one exception is the original Canon adapter with lenses: it is expensive, even 2nd hand and it works with some teles only.

So to get the most out of your EOS body, you really should look into some EOS compatible glass.

I plan on getting some glass for it. I really like having image stabilization. There is a lens rental company that is close to me. They do mostly internet rentals but will allow local pickup. Its LensRentals

    https://www.lensrentals.com/?exit=true

I thought I would rent a few before I buy. That makes me think. I have a two day layover in Aguadilla Puerto Rico. I plan on doing some night photography. I wish I had thought to get some lenses to take with me.

I am one of their customers. My usual pattern is to rent from them, fall in love with the fancy and far too expensive gear and then I end up buying it... careful. Excellent company. Their gear is always top notch, lenses are perfectly calibrated, sometimes better than new from factory.

For night shots, a tripod is more useful than stabilization, unless you're thinking high ISO urban street photography where subject is more important than image quality. For that type of shooting a stabilized lens will get you a huge gain in keeper images.

@fishmonger When I do night city scapes I use 50 ISO in my medium format film camera. Long exposures 15 min. I have a nice tripod. I have not had a chance to do it with my 5D. I am sure it will do a better a job. I was planing on doing some long exposures of the night sky over the ocean.
That’s good to hear about LensRental I have not tried them yet. I’m glad I can drive to pickup a lens from them.

One thing to watch out for with long exposures is the "hot pixel" problem - sensor gets hot during a 15 minute expsoure. Look for "Dark Frame Subtraction," which is the method used to deal with the problem. There's really no way around that with digital, just like color shift with film wasn't avoidable. With Photoshop you can fix the digital issues quite easily.

Oh yeah, darkroom equipment. I finally tried to donate it to the local Thrift Store store, and they didn't want it. So, some of it went to the recycle bin, and the rest is in a landfill somewhere.

You will encounter the same problems with long exposures as you do with high ISO settings. I'm not talking about 15 minute exposures, but using a long exposure instead of a high ISO. Noise.

That is one of the reasons I don't want a 36MP DSLR, unless it is a big-chip Hasselblad, which I can't justify buying from a business point of view. Do I want one? Yes. Will it pay for itself anytime soon? No.

My 16MP Nikon D4 does a great job in low light. Too many pixels on a sensor means noise (the digital version of grain from the film days).

I don't need to do a lot of low light work, but I sometimes shoot some of my college friends when they play local clubs. I shot this at 12,800 ISO -- handheld.

I will use a high iso tonight. I will only be doing about 15 sec exposures tonight so I don’t get star trails. I don’t think I will be doing any city scapes Just the beach and night sky. I hope I can find some good places to shoot. Arecibo radio telescope is about an hour and a half away, I wish I could do some night shots there.

My favorite dog photo is one I took of Teddy, AKA "Psycho-Poodle," when he was still quite young. He was in a very playful mood, and was jumping to grab the camera, for some reason -- maybe it looked like a toy, to him. I snapped this shot, and I love it. It really captures his personality.

Love it! Do you have the shot as taken. I'd love to see if I could recover his nose details in Photoshop.

I didn't do anything Mini related today. My wife and I went to Ikea today and bought a cabinet to put some of my old cameras in. All the cameras in the case work. the oldest was made in 1919.
