I've had the privilege of filming this event 2 years ago. Blew my mind! That was the year that Monster Tajima broke the 10 min. mark. I've got some footage around here somewhere of gravel being thrown directly at me. I'll have to dig it up. This year should be quite interesting.

The last time we spoke, I promised I would talk about the 208 T16 Pikes Peak and my approach to the American hill climb. Now the first practice session is over, itâ€™s time to deliver!

First of all, a short word about last weekend, when my wife SÃ©verine and I contested the Rallye du Chablais which takes place near our home. I know the organiser well, I like the stages and it was a chance to compete with no pressure in a PH Sport-runDS3 WRC. Extremely wet weather(10cm of rain in two days!) madethe conditions fairly complex, including plenty of aquaplaning and a harmless excursion into a field. We ran different types of tyre, including â€˜cutâ€™ slicks towards the end. It was all tremendous fun.

Now, the Peugeot 208â€¦ I first drove it at a circuit, then at Mont Ventoux, in the south of France. What immediately struck me was its crazy acceleration and incredible stopping power, but we needed to make it more controllablefor the 20 or so kilometres and 156 turns that awaited us at Pikes Peak.

My first drive in the car in Colorado was at a small oval,near Pikes Peak, where we laid out five or six corners. That was a useful exercise because access to the course itself isextremely limited, so you need to make the most of every climb! The team had clearly worked hard since our last test in France and they had ticked all the boxes on the job list. We did a useful fine-tuning run which made the carâ€™s handling much more progressive.

To give you an idea of the course, I would say that first part is like a RallyCatalunya stage, only wider, with a good surface. I spent two-and-a-half days doing a thorough recce with Daniel [Elena], although we werenâ€™t permitted to go any faster than 30mph, which is less than 50kph. We tried to evaluate the precise angle of each turn, something that isnâ€™t easy watching a video.

These climbs at a snailâ€™s pace enabled me to commit the course to memory. Listening to Daniel, I was able to put â€˜wordsâ€™ to the corners and learn the notes by heart. My aim was to eliminate or, at least, minimise the risk of getting two turns mixed up. Given the drops, thatâ€™s something I donâ€™t want to do. The upper part of the climb is very barren, and all you can see is the horizon...

The first practice session was this morning (Saturday, June 8), but more tests are scheduled on June 9, 14, 15 and 16! You practice over portions of five or six kilometres at a timeâ€¦ between five and eight oâ€™clock in the morning, and Iâ€™m not someone who likes to get up early!

On Saturday, we covered the first six kilometres and my first run started at around 5:30am. I immediately felt comfortable and confident in the car and, by my second or third run, I managed to find a nice rhythm. I completed five runs and it was a very positive start. With the new gear ratios, the cohesion between the ratios and corner anglesis more like what I am accustomed to, and I didnâ€™t even ask for the set-up to be changed. The run also confirmed that I had memorised the course well because I didnâ€™t have any doubts whatsoever.

We need to see if that first impression is confirmed over the following sections, but I must say I am really pumped up about the event. Itâ€™s a fresh challenge and I will be up against drivers like Jean-Philippe Dayraut, Romain Dumas (who has opted for an ultra-lightweight car), Rhys Millen and Tajima who seems to be really wound up in his videos. Plus the fact that driving my â€˜fighter jet on wheelsâ€™ is so exhilaratingâ€¦

Loeb fastest at Pikes Peak practice (WRC.com)

Sebastien Loeb has gone fastest in his Peugeot 208 T16 at the first official test sessions for the Pikes Peak hillclimb in Colorado.

The reigning World Rally Champion drove the 20-kilometre mountain road for the first time in anger at the weekend, with the first half tackled on Saturday (8 June) and the second half on Sunday.

â€œI feel very confident with the car,â€ Loeb said after setting the quickest time on both days.

â€œThatâ€™s a reassuring start, if only because of the speeds we get up to here. We are already getting close to the limit in many places. All we need to do now is make some detail changes and we will be ready for the Big Day!â€

On Friday 7 June, Loeb carried out a shakedown test of his 875bhp car at the nearby Colorado Springs Speedway.

He also made a recce of the 4300-metre climb accompanied by his WRC co-driver Daniel Elena. Although Loeb will be alone when he makes the ascent for real on 30 June, the pair made notes for each of the hillâ€™s 156 corners to help him memorise the route.

â€œThe result of the weekend is globally positive,â€ said Peugeot Sportâ€™s Director Bruno Famin.

â€œOur â€˜beastâ€™ seems to suit Sebastien, to the extent that we have hardly made any changes to its set-up. The carâ€™s potential is borne out by the fact that we posted the fastest time on each run. That said, last yearâ€™s winner Rhys Millen, who is something of a benchmark here, it still familiarising himself with his own car and there was very little real opposition.

"The chief lesson, therefore, is that the 208 T16 Pikes Peak is a well-sorted car and that our busy programme in the past four months seems to have taken us in the right direction. We will now need to continue in the same vein.â€

The next free practice session will take place on Friday 14 June, with two more official practice sessions on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June.

Wider, Lower And Decidedly More Sinister

Rhys Millen was sitting on a cooler whittling away at a piece of aluminum when I first arrived at the expansive skidpad at the California Proving Grounds, owned by Hyundai, located in a desolate part of the California desert about a dozen miles east of Mojave. By the time I had walked over to the accomplished driver for introductions, he had picked up a piece of sandpaper and begun to arduously file away at the alloy's rough edges, smoothing them masterfully.

He was focused on the job, but I politely interrupted him and asked what he was making. Ryhs looked up, smiled, and then grabbed a few zip-ties and asked me to come over to the new Hyundai RMR PM580-T, destined for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in just two short weeks, raised on its air jacks just a few yards away.

It was late morning, and the blue, white and orange race car sat naked and exposed, missing most of its outer skin. Unlike last year's vehicle, a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe race car, which set the course record at 9:46.164, the new car looks wider, lower and decidedly more sinister. My objective was to find out why.

A closer look revealed a carbon fiber monocoque tub, actually a Gen-1 Crawford Performance Engineering Daytona Prototype chassis (manufactured in November 2005), clearly visible through the custom tubing. With the exception of the pushrod suspension with coil-overs, brake ducting for the iron rotors on the outsides of the frame rails and the large aluminum radiator tilted forward to swallow fresh airflow at altitude (the blue hose, mounted just ahead of the radiator, provides a cooling spray of water), there really wasn't much else to the front end.

The rear, however, was all business as the race team had bolted one of Hyundai's Lambda V6 engines in place. While the engine started life as a naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter, it now existed as a 4.1-liter V6 forced to breathe through an absolutely massive Garrett turbocharger. A custom intake, free-flow exhaust, specialized engine management and a diet of racing fuel provide all of the proper ingredients to generate upwards of 800 horsepower. The rear-wheel drive powertrain features a sequential six-speed gearbox, with a clutch for launch. The most striking part of the engine bay was unquestionably the gold foil, its bright surface covering as much as possible in an effort to reflect the immense heat away from critical parts.

2013 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 1 (autoblog.com)

For 2013, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has has added a fourth practice day, part of an effort to give each of the competitors extra practice running up the mountain. That day is today, and it saw the cars running on the bottom-half of the course, while the two-wheelers ran up top.

The extra practice day was not without drama. As we mentioned earlier, the Lovefab Enviate Acura NSX of Cody Loveland endured a huge crash due to a faulty part and is likely done for the week. In the Unlimited class, the Forge Motorsports Ford RS200 driven by Pat Doran also had a big off, but his racecar might live to see raceday this weekend.

World Rally Championship maestro SÃ©bastien Loeb showed why he's the master of perilous ascents, tallying today's quickest section time with a 3:30.768 in his Peugeot 208 T16. Loeb's time buried that of current champ Rhys Millen, who rang up 3:54.835 in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe Unlimited racer. Veteran hillclimber Paul Dallenbach chipped in with the quickest Time Attack session at 4:16.113. (For further timing and results information, click here.)

In the burgeoning Electric class, Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima has returned with his Monster Sport E-Runner for a second try after mechanical failure ended his race last year. He's got a ways to go, though, as he only ran the fourth-quickest time in the class, 4:16.562. Top time today for the Electric class went to Dakar rally winner Hiroshi Masuoka in his Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution II.

Wednesday will see more practice sessions and the start of qualifying, which will carry on throughout the week. The run for the record books in Colorado officially gets underway on Sunday at 8:00 am MDT.

Since they are doing all tarmac this year adding an extra day is a good idea. Plus the fact the speeds will be higher on pavement. Man I wish I could be out there again. Maybe next year.

After he wrecked there was speculation he might be able to get it back together in time for the race but he's not listed on today's qualifying list.

The one below, however, is definitely out.

Let there be no doubt â€“ racing automobiles can be very dangerous. This unfortunate fact of life has been proven once again today by Cody Loveland, owner of LoveFab, who crashed his Corvette-powered tube-frame Acura NSX on the second turn of the Pikes Peak hill climb course, apparently after a rear upper control arm failed. Cody hit a wall of boulders at high speed, after which the racecar caught fire.

Cody was able to escape the blaze unhurt â€“ minus some missing hair that was singed off in the fire â€“ but the car appears to be a complete mess, as you can see from the image above. The LoveFab Motorsports team has vowed to do its very best to rebuilt the car in time for the competition, but we'd be awfully surprised (and impressed) if that burnt-up hulk were ready for racing with just a few days to rebuild.

We're happy to hear that Cody got away safely, and here's hoping the rest of the competitors get up the hill without incident, or, like Cody, are at least able to walk away uninjured if they don't.

2013 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 3 (autoblog.com)

The third practice day of the 91st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is done. While the other classes got running time on the middle and top sections of the course, qualifying times were set on the bottom section of the course for the Open, Open Wheel, Electric, Exhibition and Vintage classes.

Everyone managed to keep it on the black stuff today, Greg Tracy setting the fastest time ahead of Hiroshi Masuoka, both men driving the Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution II four-wheel-drive prototype. Not even half a second behind Masuoka came Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima in his Monster Sport E-Runner, who has taken about 18 seconds off his time since the first practice day. Rod Millen was the fourth fastest on the day in his Toyota TMG EV POO2.

Topping the Open Wheel class was Clint Vahsholtz, followed by Donner Billingsley, Andy Figueroa and Rodney O'Maley. The only driver in that class not to be given a time today was Dan Novembre. Kenshiro Gushi took the Exhibition class today as his Lexus IS F CCS-R made it up the mountain in 4:27.248, followed by Sage Marie in the Honda CR-Z at 5:19.591. Simon Pagenaud and his Honda Odyssey weren't classified.

Layne Schranz nabbed the top time for Pikes Peak Open runners in his 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Randy Schranz behind him in his Shelby Cobra, Jeff MacPherson right behind in his Porsche 914-8. The old-timers in the Vintage division were lead by Christopher Lennon in a 1973 Porsche 911 RSR, Ralf Christensson two seconds behind him in a 1967 Ford Fastback GT350. The final times and running order will be released after tomorrow's qualifying, at about 5 pm Mountain time. As of now, five cars have dropped out â€“ in some cases literally â€“ of the original 69-car field, and 83 bikes remain of the 86 entrants.

Further up the mountain the Time Attack and Unlimited runners were practicing in the middle section of the course. Paul Dallenbach led the Time Attack field in Rhys Millen's Hyundai Genesis Coupe from last year with a time of 2:33, then came the two Porsches of Jeff Zwart at 2:38 and David Donner at 2:40

At the top of the field, the SÃ©bastien Loeb again led the timesheets with a 2:12, and was again followed by Romain Dumas at 2:26. Third place went to Dayraut in the monster Mini at 2:29.

Rhys Millen hasn't got a mention yet because he didn't run today. His Hyundai PM580T had an engine problem last night and the team decided to put in a brand new motor. They only finished doing that this morning while the others were running, then spent the day testing at an oval/road course near Colorado Springs to make sure everything's good to go for tomorrow. He'll be back on the mountain tomorrow, and we'll be back with a report then.

Tomorrow's practice will have all of the bike divisions qualifying on the bottom of the course while the other classes get their settings dialed in for race day on Sunday. Millen's record set last year was 9:46.

He beat that this year by nearly 45sec with a 9:02.

Dayraut (this guy) also finished under Millen's 2012 record time with a 9:42.

A few more great times set first though, including Dallenbach in time attack class just beating Millen's old record with a 9:46.
