I saw they have a newer style cap but the reviews say that the threads dont line up. Not sure?

Under the hood
Jacked the car up today to locate the oil filter housing and see how hard this job will be. Took some pictures, maybe someone can give me some pointers...
View from the top, looks like I wouldn't be able to reach the bolts from the top...
Decided to take off the left front wheel and see If it was accessible from there...
Tried to zoom in the best I could. Looks like the 2 closest bolts should be no problem, but there is the 3rd bolt which is on the opposite side of the housing, not sure if I will be able to reach it...
So I put the wheel back on, will get oil tomorrow. Any advice would be great. Maybe a better/easier way of getting to the housing. Thanks -
Help!
Alright cars jacked up, oil drained filter taken out. On to the housing.
Cannot for the life of me reach the far/3rd bolt from the wheel well. Managed to take off the first two but i cannot find an angle to get to that 3rd bolt please help -
I remember seeing some discussion about this with Scott from Motoring Magic but for the life of me I can't find it. Might I recommend that you give him a ring.

reviving this thread. I noticed my housing was leaking the other day on my 06, looking at the pictures you posted on here did yours have the cooler on there? and does anyone know if its possible to change just the housing gasket without removing the cooler?

His was an 02 car yours in and 2006 and the part is different than the one pictured above.
I had HELIX replaced my oil cooler on my 05 and it's just like yours.
Let me find the link to the part. (see below)
About $135.00 and you can get part #5 by it self.

Dave thanks for the info, my cooler is fine though. I was just wondering if I can pull the housing off the block to change the gasket without unbolting the cooler from the housing. I bought replacement o-rings but would rather not mess with it as its not leaking but I will if I absolutely need to.

Ahh ok. I don't think so but I am not 100% sure. Shoot Chad from DT a PM or give him a call tomorrow.

I don't think the Coopers had an oil cooler/warmer?

The cage in early (R50) MINI Cooper Oil Caps (hard to come by)
I have a 2002 MINI Cooper and am looking for a little information. I still have the original oil cap and housing. The cap has the OEM plastic cage that gets reused for the new filter with each oil change (to maintain oil pressure). After this last oil change, I noticed that the cage is in jeopardy of breaking because of the many times I've had to pry it out of the old oil filter; it rarely comes out easy.
I could bore everyone with questions about the new style cap, whether it goes on to the old style housing, etc., etc. But, instead of that, I will just appeal to anyone who might, by sheer chance, have an extra cage laying around. I have tried to work with salvage yards, but since the part is so friggin' obscure, it's very hard to have at it.
If you have a spare one you're willing to part with, please send me a private message. If there are any other solutions that don't involve changing out the oil housing, I'm open to that. My days of long repairs on the MINI are over, along with a bad back!...
Any help?
Thanks,
Michael -
Just read the other thread that got closed. I haven't changed my oil since I broke the housing off - I'm under the impression that I can't use a filter meant for an 03 now though if I'm understanding what I'm reading...

Didn't even realize this guy was banned on Tapatalk. No dice anyway...
I still remember cursing my way through this one. There's no easy way to do it. Three little bolts that are ridiculously difficult to get to. -
Bump!
Hey all, I am about to attempt to change out the oil filter housing on my 2003 R50 (non S). I'm struggling to find any documentation on this job. I saw people mentioning cooler/coolant hoses. Does this apply to the R50, or is this just for models with a supercharger?
Also, does anyone have any photos or diagrams of the oil filter housing? I can find plenty of videos of people changing the gasket on the housing, but none of them changing the housing itself. Is it much more trouble to change out the entire housing beyond swapping out the gasket?
Any help would be SUPER appreciated, as my Haynes manual has nothing about this in it. Also, if anyone by chance happens to have a spare early model oil filter cap with the cage inside, please hit me up!
