I didn't even know about the movie but I was a huge sports car fan a few years older than that (and seriously lusting after the 930 Turbo Carrera) when I read The Making of a Winner: The Porsche 917. It was like a biography of Porsche from before it even existed in terms of everything that lead up to the 917 and its success at Le Mans and beyond. I was hooked (brainwashed?) and for about a decade I had a tough time looking at any non-Porsche sports car without disdain.

Derek Bell is one of the good guys in motorsports. I have several things signed by him, not the least of which is a Porsche Factory poster he signed for me on the wing of the Lowenbrau car at the Palm Beach GP. Another cool one is the start of Le Mans where he is cutting off the Ferrari in a 917. What an era in racing. It is a shame so many died, for it was the era of beautiful cars...
