Yes its a GL-5 and the Getrag will function best with a GL-4 in my application. I picked up some Redline MTL locally

BThayer23 Well-Known MemberThat's what Dan at Grassroots recommended for my 06 with a factory LSD. It feels thin for the first couple hundred miles, then it kind of settles in. I'm not sure if there's a perfect fluid out there.
-
Yea it was not the consistency I thought it would be. Got it swapped out and test drove. Got a chance to test the LSD out of DSC. Pulled out onto a road covered in dirt from a construction project.
-
No big performance changes really. Need to update a bit I guess.
Pics of the Gen 5 Eaton. All oil removed and replaced. Also removed the snout for inspection and sealed.

NS1 cam installed but no images. Love this cam BTW.
Installed R56 rear trailing arms.

agranger MINI of the Month June 2009Supporting MemberI've been using Redline MTL in my '06 MCS w/ factory LSD for around 50-60k miles. Works great for me.

You don't find it a bit "thin". I ran it in mine for a little over a year and went back to OEM cause it didn't feel as smooth.

agranger MINI of the Month June 2009Supporting MemberEver since I put on the short shifter, my shifting feels a bit 'thick' (but I like the shorter throw enough to not let it bother me). Anything that makes it a bit slicker is good for me. Honestly, I chalked up any slight change in feeling to the freshness/cleanliness of the fluid... never did a side-by-side comparision of clean MTL vs. clean OEM close enough to each other to be able to tell any appreciable difference.

I agree that it's a bit thinner, but not necessarily something I dislike.

Wow, the last couple pages look a lot like my thread

Are you sure you can use a GL-4 in your trans? My Clubman has the factory LSD, and recommends using a Texaco MTF-94 IIRC. Using a GL-4 may reduce the effectivenes of the OEM LSD.
I also ran the GL-4 in my R53 getrag (open diff) and it was hard as hell to shift. Switched to Amsoil Synchromesh and love it. Also I have converted every VW 02J and 02M from my co'workers cars with Synchromesh and they all love it. Not saying it would work best with a factory LSD. For a stock getrag with an open diff, that is my recommendation.
Great build, will be following :smile5: -
I dont notice it effecting my trans or diff. Shifting is still nice and smooth and the LSD works as it should during wheel slip.
I have always been under the impression that GL-4 is the preferred fluid for the Getrag and LSD? Maybe I am wrong? -
GL-4 is the spec fluid for the much heavier Audi Quattro transmissions. It may be okay with the LSD Mini trans, but as far as I know it does not have the additives to keep the diff functioning properly as in the MTF-94 (or so says Mini).
Let us know how it works out in the long-term. It may be a good solution for the LSD equipped cars with poor shift feel. :beer -
Actually, MTF-94 is a GL-4, and it is often used to fix noisy OEM LSDs, which can groan at wheel lock. MTF-94 is the specified fill for the first generation.
MTF-94 (a GL-4) has a very sophisticated and robust additive package. I spoke to Terry Dyson about the transmission lube, and he knew quite a bit about its development by Texaco; he tested a 30,000 mile change interval from my gearbox, with excellent results.

Thanks! Did not know they were one in the same, good information :smile5:
