On a previous thread (can't remember which one) somebody (can't remember who) talked about an oil seal (can't remember which seal) that is prone to leaking, yet only costs a few bucks/minutes to replace. Anyone help? And yes, I suffer from C.R.S. (can't remember sh**). Well, at least I think I dout:
This would be the Library article on replacing the crank sensor seal Crank Sensor Seal Replacement - Library
That is probably the one I have a very, very light oil leak that I noticed on my garage floor. Don't see it every day, and looks to be coming from the passenger side.
Maybe it wasn't a thread but a song (I am the Walrus), the someone was Paul (from the Beatles) and it was a Walrus not a seal (they look the same). And perhaps they said they were prone to trip for a few bucks/minutes listing to I am the seal, oops I meant Walrus.:biggrin5: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvG3BSfM4go]The Beatles - I Am The Walrus - Lyrics - YouTube[/ame]
The crank sensor is a quick fix with a bit of black RTV, don't waste time replacing an o-ring that will do the same thing down the road, just take the sensor out lay a bead of RTV around the base, and reinstall. The crank seal is notorious for leaking, but while cheap, you need to investigate if that is actually the culprit. A leak over there can be anything from: oil pan gasket, timing cover seal, crank seal, filter housing gasket (would have to be REALLY bad), or even a failed filter o-ring if you recently did an oil change. But the latter usually ends in you expelling about 3-4 quarts of oil all over the ground before noticing the leak.. If you do find that you need the seal, we have them on our website: MINI Cooper Crank Seal R50 R52 R53 You will also need the crank pulley install tool, 3 jaw puller, and the MINI tool to install in the center of the crank so you have something for the puller to engage against, you need the special tool or a bolt and cut the head off, you will cause damage to the end of the crank if you don't. We rent out the all the necessary specialty tools except for the 3 jaw puller which you can get from your local parts store. Nick Detroit Tuned
^^This process sums up everything you need to fix that damn O -ring. ^^ Most people think they have a leaking oil pan gasket which is not the case. This damn seal leaks oil down the front of the engine and blows back on the oil pan making it look like your oil pan gasket has failed. I had the same issue and only replaced the O-ring and cleaned my oil pan. Now, going on two years, my oil pan is still dry. I also think the replacement O-ring is a little larger then the original one and that's why it was leaking to begin with and the new one correct the defect. Kind of sounds like an F56 oil issue?
Thanks for all the input. No sign of a leak for the last 2 days, but will take a look at the weekend when I have more time.
Check you PS fluid. The hoses are know to leak. If you are low you must use the correct fluid to top up. Pentosin CHF 11, you can get it at O Reilly's auto parts.
They used to say if your British car was not leaking oil.....it was out of oil. I hate oily engines so I'm swapping the seals on a regular basis. I think I've swapped the gearbox seals for axles 6 times already because once in another car I didn't finish a rally because the seal blew.
Mystery solved. This morning was the first chance that I have had to look under the bonnet for a week (work/commute tends to get in the way of the fun stuff). Popped the bonnet, and felt around the oil filter housing/oil pressure unit. No leak. As I looked around, I saw that the oil(?) is leaking out of the motor mount. Now I have 4 questions. 1, How much are these things for a 2006 R50? 2, How much of a pain in the arse to replace? 3, Car still driveable? 4, More importantly, how do I get that black crap off the Chili Red?
That is a common failure, clean up with alcohol. Yes you can drive it, but you need to replace it. My MINI is on its third mount. It is DIYable. Send Steven at eMINIparts.com a PM he can set you up & very likely be the best price you'll find. Some folks like aftermarket mounts, but for me I use the stock one. The NVH from the aftermarket ones would bother me.
Crashton, thanks for that. "Clean up with alcohol"? Hope that you are not expecting me to use my best Bombay Sapphire gin on this thing :beer Is this a diy thing or a shop job?
Sent PM to Steven @ eMINIparts for price, etc. That guy is awesome!!!!!!! Matched best price that I could find online. Currently waiting to hear from the dealer (not a MINI dealer) that I bought the car from, to see if the mount is covered by warranty. Had a 3 year/30000 or 36000 mile warranty on the car.
