I just did a Midlands to Getrag 6-speed conversion (actually, had my local MINI friendly
shop - Swedish Motors in Marietta, PA do it) a few months ago, after the differential
bearings bit the dust on my 11.5 year old 2003 MC with 80,000 miles. I sourced all the parts
myself and they did the labour. Lots of extra parts besides the trans to make it work.
I went with a Valeo flywheel and clutch conversion kit and also put a Quaife LSD in it.
I am very satisfied with the results. The shifting is much more precise and a bit higher
effort than the Midlands, especially going into reverse, but I'm now quite used to it.
I'm even getting about 1-2 mpg better on highway driving, although non-highway milage
is about the same as before or perhaps a smidge less.

wow! good job, with all my rallying abuse I couldn't break the input shaft. If you want the Midlands box gone I'll take it for the shipping cost and a few beers! I can make a spare.

Chris, the midlands with the broken input shaft is the box that I sent off to Jon Waterhouse. Thankfully I don't need to replace the trans or even open it up. The issue was a broken drive shaft. I have to stop being so dramatic and pessimistic I guess.

Thanks again guys and sorry for posting prematurely.

I really have no idea. It was replaced less than 3k miles ago. Replacing with an feq part. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Yup, left side. Hopefully it's still at the shop so I can take better pics. The actual cast piece closest to the joint shattered and the joint fell apart/out.

After typing in FEQ mini, I'm not convinced this won't happen again either. Saving the receipt for this one but the other was put on not so long ago because the stock piece was worn and causing horrible vibration. This didn't make so much as a sound before it broke.
