R53 late model motor mount - PICs

Anyone ever wanted to see the inside of one??

    Here it is:

And, here is what "pops" and lets the fluid out.

Sorry for the not-so-great pics. My good camera was at home.

If you were to re-assemble, it would be top on the left and bottom on the right (in second pic).

The fluid is in the bottom half of the mount. The part that is stuck diagonal is the sealing ring. Poor, poor design, imho.

Yes, interesting. So those rubber(?) thingies in the second piece (2nd photo) are immersed in the fluid? How exactly does it work? :confused5:

Thanks for the pics, always wanted to disect one and just see what's in there. Perfect example of someone making something that should be fairly simple, complicated.... And then not engineering it to last....:nonod: Thankfully we now have other options..

Yep, the lower half is the only part containing fluid.

The upper half is somewhat free to move around. There en lies the problem.
Its movement is supposed to be limited by the upper half (metal), while it is, it is allowed to move too much before meeting the metal housing. Therefore putting too much stress on the inner workings. Namely the lower sealing "flap". Seen in pic 3.
Keep in mind that I cut the center so that you can actually see what I mean.
There was only a small hole (pinhole) in the edge of the circle. But, that would be enough for fluid to escape via the 2 holes in the bottom.

The part dead-center of 1st pic has the anchor for the mount attached to the motor. The part of that assembly that is tilted, is what seals the fluid in the lower half. It is pressed into the lower bowl - over the large hockey-puck looking thing. It acts as the "damper" in the fluid.

Just FYI vertical travel has been observed at over an inch. While there is horizontal movement, there is way more on the vertical side of things.

Anyone want to gander a guess as to what I did with this?

They all fail. All. BSH are knee deep in their lab, working away on a better alternative. They should have something soon.

Mine moves around MUUUUUUCH less since I installed the VIP dogbone damper. My suspicion is that this will significantly extend the life of the OEM mount/damper. 69,000 hard miles (about half of those since the VIP install), hasn't failed yet...
