Got this in the mail today........

Looks like MINI is extending the warranty on the R56 N14 (Turbo) engine 2007 - 2009 model year to 10 years or 120,000 miles.

    About time....

that they step up to the plate on some obvious design issues. Now what about drivetrain warranty extensions for the cold start issues, and warranty extensions for the power steering system?

Well, one out of three is a start.....

I was kind of wondering if MINI did this because if it was connected to the emissions, and they were federally mandated to do so. The cold start and power steering issues aren't, so we can all go pound sand on those problems.

    Don't think so...

but who knows. Usually, the driver is more safety related. But maybe they're finding that so many of these suckers are going south that it's being noticed and they're buying off worry with warranty extensions.

Another theory is they've gotten the manufacturer to step up and cover parts cost, so then MINI/BMW can "afford" to do the right thing.... But that would just be too synical.... Hmmmmm....

Wonder if Gabe and DB would ask the powers that be why they'd do warranty extensions for the HPFP but NOT the power steering pump? Oh, and I've read that in England, MINI was honoring power steering pump failure replacement requests way out of warranty.... Here? Not really...

Good news on the HPFP for us Canajuns

I phoned MINI Canada and they were less than helpful. Wasn't even aware of any US warranty extension and said they had heard no such directive for Canadian customers. My next step was to contact my local dealer. He too hadn't heard anything. Finally I was getting a little PO'd so I thought I'd go right to the top and try Franz Jung, president of BMW Canada. Not that he could do anything for me, but it was worth a try. In my research I came across another guy at HQ who looked promising, Robert Dexter (Product and Technology Specialist BMW Canada). I emailed Robert with a JPG version of the letter that was sent to US customers. I did not quote my VIN. I didn't have very high expectations I must say. I was pleasantly surprized today when I recieved the following email back from BMW Canada:

    Dear Mr. Liang;

Thank you very much for contacting MINI Canada.

For the vehicle following VIN number WMWM... MINI Cooper S, we can confirm that the warranty on the High Pressure Fuel Pump has been extended to 10 years or 200,000 km (whichever comes first). If there is anything else that we can help with please feel free to email back.

    Sincerely,
    Matthew

I actually forwarded the message to my the service manager at my local dealership. I think BMW Canada could do a much better job of communicating this but nevertheless I'm very pleased that I'm covered and that I didn't have to kick up a big fuss.

Looks Like Bad NEWS for Canadjun's on HPFP's! I asked through MINI.CA!
    Here's the response:

    Hi Gordon:

Thanks for contacting MINI Canada. We appreciate your inquiry.

At this time, there are no extensions on warranties for HPFPs in Canada. Unfortunately, what you sent applies to US vehicles only. MINI NA only applies to vehicles from the United States, not Canada.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us at 1-866-DRV-MINI. We would be happy to lend a hand.

    LET'S MOTOR.

See.... it all goes back to that French and Indian War. You guy's coulda beena parta us.... Including our warranty rights. Now you'll just have to move south like Lotsie did.....

Just think about it.... Stranded with low fuel pressure on a ice cold Canadian night, rampant with horny moose running loose.... Not a pretty thought....

You guy's need to put some pressure on MINI Canada.....

Sheesh..... Get that last dig.... "LET"S MOTOR".... Tell Dan it's pretty tough to do "IF YOUR FUEL PUMP DOESN'T WORK".....
