The trick is not to be the guy in the front of the line.

At one time I always used a detector back when Escort was the one to have. As time has gone by the tax collectors have gotten much better at ambushing road users. IMHO the detectors are not as fool proof as they once were. I find that driving sensibly & using situational awareness it is possible to drive in a fun manner & keep a clean license. Even in Ohio. A friend has latest & greatest detector riding with him yet he has a pile of tickets. Just my .02.

I roll old school...
Bought the original Fuzzbuster....
Fine tuning adjustment knob and a big red indicator...
I hide mine in a kleenex box and it sits right on top of my dash... Great disguise...
It has saved me countless times from getting tickets...
Course I have really slowed down a bit because it's hard seeing around the kleenex box..
It really works.. It's got Multi-band....

Ok I live in TN and I can tell you that some of these small towns and their speed limiteds are complete BS! There is a town out side Memphis with the limited set at 45miles before you get into town. It is known for being nothing more than a revenue generator, it has nothing to do with safety. Every where els on this highway the speed limited is reasonable. So lets not be hard on Gil-galad. Its this kind of crap that city councils pull that make me run a radar detector.
The road I drive on to get home is straight and 4 lanes. There is only 2 roads for a few miles on it the limit was 45, but a councilmen turn left in front of someone because HE has not paying attrition. He had the speed limit lowered because he said that was the cause. Now everyone speeds and its a honey spot for the police. By the way I have several friends on the police force that think its BS too.
Lastly the city started telling the police officers they had to right a certain number of tickets a month. They went to the union and they made the city back down.
I am lucky I live in a suburb where the police force is small and cares about common sense, but more importunely the citizens.-

In '03 I went to the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette celebration at Titan Stadium in Nashville. Only Vettes were allowed to park at the stadium itself, everyone else had to park offsite and be bused in. After the ZZ Top concert the parking lot emptied. Local LEO's stopped traffic until the lot was empty and the overhead billboard/sign was even flashing Corvettes Only. On I-65 going north to Bowling Green where most were staying the TN and KY troopers blocked the on ramps until we were past. Quite a sight seeing all lanes as far as the eye could see filled with quad tail lights. 80-85MPH all the way to BG and the only cars I saw pulled over were a station wagon and a P/U truck. Didn't take long to get there at that rate. Once in a lifetime thing and a lot of fun to boot! I have never had a detector in the Vette and to this day have not had a speeding ticket in it. (knock on wood)

Back in '82 I had one of the original Escorts. Darn thing was as big as a cigar box. Damn near pulled my sun visor of in my Supra. I used it for a few trips back and forth from CA to Biloxi. Still got nabbed a couple of times in Texas. I had several over the next decade or so and the last ticket I got while using one was for using one. They're verboten in VA and I got caught by a State Trooper with a radar detector detector. Since then I haven't had a speeding ticket, mainly because of luck and cruise control. I usually set it for 5-6 over posted and if traffic is moving faster than that, I just hang with them and stay in the right lane as much as possible.

I have been thinking about buying a radar detector, but my car came with a built in speed governor...my wife. I knew I should have never let her ride in it.
One thing about a speeding ticket at my age. Insurance companies just use it as an excuse to cancel or raise your rates. Seems like it's getting to be the same as being 16 again...without the benefits.

Also if you drive through Ohio don't have your X and K bands off. State and local still use those bands here.
I still have the front plate on because the Subie guys were always getting pulled over for no front plate. The Bears must just respect The Helmet more.-

Something to remember, those small towns usually have the older style radar. In Ohio it is passed down from the state patrol who always have the latest in ambush technology. Eventually the small town sheriff's have better units, but it always seems to be a few steps behind the state patrol.
I like that picture Gil, but it sucks for those pictured.-

^^^this......I have never needed one as I make sure I am never going that much faster than everyone else and when alone no radar detector is going to save you from the laser and the following ticket.

I have used the Escort 8500 x50 for many years with great success. I do not need the GPS option that is added by going to the 9500. Escort now has much better detectors but also more expensive. Escort also now has a 360 version (directional arrows) similar to Valentine One. The arrows would be nice because I frequently look around wondering where the radar signal emitter is located.
Escort owns Beltronics so very similar detectors. Beltronics are usually less expensive for similar features.
Selectable bands is a nice feature so you can turn off bands you do not care about such as X and K. I usually only leave on Ka and Laser.-
