Right the radar jammer falls under the FCC the laser doesn't. There were jammers that would just give a slower number back. I don't know if they are still around and if the work with the new frequencies. When there was just X and K you could jam them with a fish finder. Also if you drive through Ohio don't have your X and K bands off. State and local still use those bands here. I still have the front plate on because the Subie guys were always getting pulled over for no front plate. The Bears must just respect The Helmet more.
Radar Jammers are still around, but they are high dollar. Just ask someone that runs some of the rallys. I am leaning towards valentine one, But I like the way the Escort app works with there radar detector. I have a very old Escort now but it does not work if it gets hot.
I use a Escort Solo S2 because it is cordless, it works great and has saved me many, many times over the years.
I roll old school... Bought the original Fuzzbuster.... Fine tuning adjustment knob and a big red indicator... I hide mine in a kleenex box and it sits right on top of my dash... Great disguise... It has saved me countless times from getting tickets... Course I have really slowed down a bit because it's hard seeing around the kleenex box.. It really works.. It's got Multi-band....
My V1 has saved my bacon on numerous occasions. The units purchased new now have filters for the ever increasing prevalence on new vehicles of blind spot sensors operating in K Band. My older unit needs the software update but I haven't succumbed to the need yet due to the cost of the update. On a recent MINI trip to the Great Smokies there was so much highway interference in K Band during the transit out due to all of the new emitters on newer cars that I started to ignore the hits in this band. The fact that most law enforcement systems these days operate in Ka or laser bands leads one to a false sense of security. We learned this the hard way in Townsend, TN in light fog on our way to the Dragon -- the local constable was using a K Band unit that we ignored until it was too late, and the last two MINIs in our caravan got popped for doing 67 in a 45 zone. The rest of us pulled over about 200 yards down the road (where the pic below was taken) but being the loyal and supportive group that we are, we quickly fled to exit the town limits and waited for our unfortunate mates to catch up with us at the Foothills Parkway entrance.
Well, as you can see from the pic the fog wasn't restricting the visibility all that much; and if you've driven through that town you already know that 45 mph is a completely ridiculous limit for the four lanes of US-321 there. Anyway, no sympathy sought. We learned our lesson.
How many cars escaped? The visuals of a caravan of MINIs going 67 in a 45, on a 2 lane road in the fog, going around a curve,...and a deer jumping onto the road are just horrible.
US-321 there is a straight, flat, four-lane highway with open lots on either side. The fact is the lead car never exceeded 55 mph but the "accordion effect" came into play (the last cars getting behind and then trying to catch up with the group ahead). Only the last two MINIs of the nine in our group paid the price.
I have been thinking about buying a radar detector, but my car came with a built in speed governor...my wife. I knew I should have never let her ride in it. One thing about a speeding ticket at my age. Insurance companies just use it as an excuse to cancel or raise your rates. Seems like it's getting to be the same as being 16 again ...without the benefits.
Something to remember, those small towns usually have the older style radar. In Ohio it is passed down from the state patrol who always have the latest in ambush technology. Eventually the small town sheriff's have better units, but it always seems to be a few steps behind the state patrol. I like that picture Gil, but it sucks for those pictured.
Ok I live in TN and I can tell you that some of these small towns and their speed limiteds are complete BS! There is a town out side Memphis with the limited set at 45miles before you get into town. It is known for being nothing more than a revenue generator, it has nothing to do with safety. Every where els on this highway the speed limited is reasonable. So lets not be hard on Gil-galad. Its this kind of crap that city councils pull that make me run a radar detector. The road I drive on to get home is straight and 4 lanes. There is only 2 roads for a few miles on it the limit was 45, but a councilmen turn left in front of someone because HE has not paying attrition. He had the speed limit lowered because he said that was the cause. Now everyone speeds and its a honey spot for the police. By the way I have several friends on the police force that think its BS too. Lastly the city started telling the police officers they had to right a certain number of tickets a month. They went to the union and they made the city back down. I am lucky I live in a suburb where the police force is small and cares about common sense, but more importunely the citizens.
In '03 I went to the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette celebration at Titan Stadium in Nashville. Only Vettes were allowed to park at the stadium itself, everyone else had to park offsite and be bused in. After the ZZ Top concert the parking lot emptied. Local LEO's stopped traffic until the lot was empty and the overhead billboard/sign was even flashing Corvettes Only. On I-65 going north to Bowling Green where most were staying the TN and KY troopers blocked the on ramps until we were past. Quite a sight seeing all lanes as far as the eye could see filled with quad tail lights. 80-85MPH all the way to BG and the only cars I saw pulled over were a station wagon and a P/U truck. Didn't take long to get there at that rate. Once in a lifetime thing and a lot of fun to boot! I have never had a detector in the Vette and to this day have not had a speeding ticket in it. (knock on wood)
Not sure about the R53, but the R56 was notorious for the speedo being 5-7 MPH off. When I had Helix do some coding at the Dragon it was corrected within a couple of MPH. On my F56 the digital speedo is almost dead on with my GPS.
Policemen as tax collectors. I'm sure the majority of them would rather be doing constructive police work. In small towns they count on the speed tax to help keep the lights on in city hall.
Texas is big on using Policemen as tax collectors. The main route from Dallas to Amarillo is a state route, mostly rather rural. As one approaches a town speed limits drop rather quickly from 70 - 45 - 25. Often with the local deputy hidden right there at the sign posts. All municipalities use a scale to determine how much to fine you, based on how many miles per hour over the speed limit you were going, but the scale is different for each locality. Most of these little towns rape you with it not uncommon to drop $200 for being only 10 over.
When I was into VW's, a guy got a speeding ticket for doing 87 in a 65 mph zone. He framed it. True story...
I use the V1. Definitely saved me many times. I only bought it over the Escort because I liked the idea of the arrows. Now Escort has them. Not that I'm inclined to drop $650. https://www.escortradar.com/max360/
