My R52's radio has been unbelievably static-filled since I got it a few months ago. I can't listen to it because there is usually more static than sound. The R56 I had before that had a great-sounding radio, with almost no static at all.

Am I right in assuming that this is probably a bad ground? The CD and AUX both sound fine, with no static whatsoever.

And if it's a bad ground, where do I start looking? My Bentley manual doesn't seem to have much guidance here.

I had the same problem with my car. The ground attachment on the back of the unit went bad. Got a new unit under warranty, but it could have been repaired.
