On my justa long ago the TOB rattled... Then failed.... Took the entire clutch and flywheel with it. Saved up lots of dollars to find out " Oh you're still under warranty... We will get your steering rack replaced at the same time." 10 hours later... I had mod budget...
yes, I thought that later. I refer to it as the clutch release bearing...haha anyway the box seems fine, turns free with no play but when I slightly move the gear stick to any gear without pushing the clutch pedal the noise goes away which suggests there is something wrong in the box or maybe the gear shift cables are not aligned because I moved the shifter box inside the car? also I can stop the noise by slightly moving the big lever on the box. Drain plug magnets had iron filings but nothing alarming.
You are always going to find metal on the magnets in the tranny. Normal wear as long as you are not seeing large chunks or gear teeth you are good.
Mini transmissions told me this which makes sense. The Noise is the input bearing chattering in the alloy intermediate plate. We always centre punch the alloy housing before putting the shafts back in. You have to knock the shafts in with a copper hammer but you don't get the rattle your describing. Nothing to worry about anyway its not going to make much difference to the drive.
A good idea Beaner but past experience has taught me that noises just get worse under rally conditions and my daily driving and you know I'm super picky..hahaha Most likely I'm going pull the box and fix it when I return in 2 weeks.
I forgot to mention I got the suspension aligned. Now the Mini drives straight! Also I have some nice decals from MA and ProDrive to fit to the Mini when I return. Saving the best to last......(MA stickers are good) We have a sponsor to cover the rally costs! for the rest of 2013 and hopefully 2014. Sept 28th is a go!
Bet it feels better with that alignment. What kind of numbers did you end up with? I'm curious as to what the camber numbers are on a raised MINI.
I got them to set it up as per the factory settings with my increased ride height as a kick off, which was easy as they adjusted the Helix rear lateral arms on the rear and with a slight toe in at the front. I have the data sheet but it's down in CR.
Off to CR on Sunday. The new sponsor wants British style launch so looks like I'll be 007 for a night! haha I'm sure I'll have plenty of video footage from this visit.
Here we go again! MA and Prodrive decals are on! I swapped the fuel pump, injectors and plugs. I get 55PSI with the vacuum plugged and 49PSI unplugged. The engine pulls strong and I'm not getting the hot cat smell......but once again the engine starting from cold on 2 cylinders , then 3 and finally 4. I checked the plugs when it was on 2 cylinders finding 2 plugs wet. Before swapping everything the plugs were dry so at least I'm moving in the right direction. hahaha The coil pack is new too! only thing I did not change is the wire which look like some autozone jobs.
So the starting problem seemed to have gone??? I shot a few oscar worthy vids!
