Nathan,
My car passed 600 miles on the way to its first AutoX and I have been pounding the crap out of it ever since. Starting in '08 I've upped the abuse to 13 or 14 track weekends a year.
Car will pass 95K at the end of this month on the drive to Cresson. The engine gets maintenance when necessary. This past weekend it got new plugs when it started throwing missfire cylinder 4 codes at TWS. All the internals are OEM original.
I am MINI testament to "let things seat then drive it like your gonna use it".

I would ask Lynn what he would do to break-in a new motor and do the exact opposite.:biggrin5:

Nate.. the 'break in' is to the engine build. With a good engine build, good ring set, good cylinder finish.. blah..blah.. break it in like you are going to drive it!!
I would change the oil to the full syn at 300-500 miles. The oil change is to remove all the metal and gunk from the build and break in.
All the new metal and designs of parts today, sorta negates the 1000 mile break ins. MOST engines are rocking after a few minutes, check for leaks , re torque.. and run it!!
Just me.........................

I don't understand how that's a good way to break in an engine, the bores are cold relatively speaking, and unless they're heating the oil up.....I don't know. I like the idea of being able to run in the parts with no load and no combustion pressures tho.. interesting.
