Well I guess Chuck and Mark will have to come up with some good engine break-in drives! That or we can trade cars for a week...I drive like 1200 miles a so or week for work...
I would ask Lynn what he would do to break-in a new motor and do the exact opposite.:biggrin5::devil:
Nate.. the 'break in' is to the engine build. With a good engine build, good ring set, good cylinder finish.. blah..blah.. break it in like you are going to drive it!! I would change the oil to the full syn at 300-500 miles. The oil change is to remove all the metal and gunk from the build and break in. All the new metal and designs of parts today, sorta negates the 1000 mile break ins. MOST engines are rocking after a few minutes, check for leaks , re torque.. and run it!! Just me......................... Thumper
We break all of our engines in the same way. Race or street 10-15min run in and warm up to check for leaks and fill cooling system On to the dyno test pull to check afr and timing for base settings, everything should be in "safe range" full power pull to 1/2 of max rpm with in gear slow down to create max vacuum, check tune also to make sure all ok full power pull to 3/4 of max rpm with in gear slow down also check AFR and knock again full power pull to max with in gear slow down, check AFR and repeat 5 more times but DO NOT over heat the engine Engine will continue to gain power until 3rd or 4th pull and then flatten out Let engine idle for 3-5mins to cool down Shut down engine and change oil, check oil filter for debris, if no debris continue to next step. If debris in filter find and repair issues. Engine break in is complete Now do any tuning the engine may need Drive as normal with 5000 mile oil change after that. With that said if your engine builder wants to break in the engine a different way then that is his call and you should follow his advice.
Thanks for chiming in, these were exactly some of the responses I was hoping to get when I started this thread. It's great to hear from those that build a few engines!
Simtest Low Stress Engine Break-in.... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCcPE3TTUtk]Chevrolet 502 Simtest - Port Engine - YouTube[/ame]
I don't understand how that's a good way to break in an engine, the bores are cold relatively speaking, and unless they're heating the oil up.....I don't know. I like the idea of being able to run in the parts with no load and no combustion pressures tho.. interesting.
Thank God. Maybe you should give him your User Id and password or make a new one for him so he can post under a new ID like he does on the NAMless site. ( I AM KIDDING NATHAN) Just sayin.....we all know his trickes and they are old. Sorry back on topic. I would drive it easy for the first few hundred of the break in.
What's a "trickes"? Oh and Nathan I wouldn't have asked but you had left his post up...... Ok my bad Nathan :mad2:
