Step one is the strip off the old paint and prepare the surface to accept the powder coating. This means bead blasting or grit blasting until the wheel has a matte finish. Step two is to clean up the wheel with some alcohol and compressed air to remove the dust. Step three is to set the wheel up in the booth and apply an electric charge to attract the powder coating material, in this case polyester powder. The last step is to put the wheel in the oven and bake the paint for about 15 minutes at 300 F. The result is a tough, resilient finish that is very weather-resistant.

Mike, if this was a DIY project using rattle-can instead of powder coating, can the wheels be sanded with a fine grit and then primed and spray painted?
    Great instructions BTW. Thanks

Is that finish then heat resistant enough to use on the track with high brake temps? I ask because I've read of high-heat powder coating paints. I imagine those are for much higher temps but it still leaves me wondering about poly powder cooked to 300 F.

I painted my wheels a few weeks ago. The inside of the wheel is flat black with a flat clear coat, the spokes are black with blue pearl and a few coats of high gloss clear.

Absolutely, I've done this on wheels in the past. Duplicolor wheel paints are particularly good for refinishing wheels.

I've had powder-coated wheels at the track and have yet to cook the paint there. The powder used was just plain-jane polyester powder. They do have some higher temperature powders (epoxy, mixed-blend) and of course the really high-temp ceramic stuff, but as you go up in temperature tolerance, weatherability goes way down.

Can't see your pics on my computers, would like to see them though. The "click to see full-sized pic" link takes me to a forum that then tells me I'm not logged in and am therefore forbidden to access the page.

As much as you hit the track, White is out.

It's a personal preference thing, but silver looks very classy on Blue; black really doesn't look so hot with blue and a white roof, but that's just me, plenty of people have done it so there is a fan club of it.

Thing is, if you're doing these custom, you could maybe do the lip in a different color--if you did the lip in the same blue as your car, and the rest of the wheel black, now that might look pretty slick, and tie the black in better. Don't know if you can do that with powder coating though.

I'd vote for plaid, but it wasn't an option.

Jim, you need to tell your wife that you're going to buy her a new super-delux-jumbo-stainless oven that also happens to accomodate up to 20" rims.

+1 for Anthracite / Gun Metal (non-brownish) - dark silver color
If I ever need to refinish my PF01's, that's what they will become.

But, of the options given to begin with... silver.
