Very light wheels will help you use every bit of power you already have.

Yeah, you guys are right... even seeing my question written down, it's pretty silly. I might as well save up for a new head and go all out

Well, even if the head/cam/tune comes in ~$2.5k, that's still not enough to get out of my R50 and into an R53, judging by local market prices. The other factors to consider are:
- The money I've already put into the R50 would be out the window (Coilovers, exhaust, intake, sound system, tint, light weight wheels plus tires for summer and winter, and on and on.)
- The low mileage (55,000KM) and "known quantity" re: my current car. It's been rock solid, and a new used car is always a gamble.
- If I go ahead with these mods, I'll be finished modding, rather than getting into a new mod vortex with an R53 and all the possibilities there
- My lack of self control with the throttle means I'd likely get into more trouble with more power
- The fun of having a bit of a sleeper and probably the quickest NA Cooper in town
Just thinking out loud here, not being argumentative. I know the R53 is the more sensible platform for performance upgrades, but I've got what I've got, and I like it quite a bit. I just think it would be fun if it was a BIT quicker.
I think if I ever feel the need to REALLY go fast again, I'll get back into motorbikes.

Hey Thumper,
We've discussed this before. I have no desire to run NOS in my DD. A cam and tune and maybe a head is as crazy as I want to get. I'm not drag or street racing so a NOS shot isn't suitable.-

I would start by giving Jan a call, an email, smoke signal, pigeon, or just get in touch with him directly by some means. Sit down and weigh your options. Cover them all. Think about the long term and short term goals, and make a plan.
Save some cash and make the trip to California. Get everything installed and tuned on the spot.
When you are all said and done, an honest handshake is going to be in order before driving away, and enjoying that first 22 hours of many years of happiness to come.
As for the remote tune option... They are just as good as an in person dyno tune. But think to yourself... Do you want to get a tune, or do you want to start a tuning relationship with the tuner face to face?-

Thanks! Its not too pricey, I think I'll go for it. If I still need more, I'll start thinking about hunting down a clean r53, and swapping over the suspension bits. I think a few extra ponies will keep me entertained for awhile though.

Occasionally I get one right! Honestly a trip to SoCal was out of the question for the next 1-2 years, but I can make it to Tacoma in about four hours, so this was really a no brainer. I just hope it's warm enough for me to put my summer rubber back on before the trip. Considering the trees outside my window are full of chirping robins right now, it SHOULD be!-

Yeah the north east has been getting pounded with snow, meanwhile here in Colorado, I find it very difficult to keep the top on the Jeep at least 2 days out of the week.

Here is a thread with my experience:
http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/cooper-s-engine-drivetrain/9998-head-header-cam-installation-results.html
The remote tune part is a breeze; just find a trustworthy dyno and you're good to go. -
Thanks for the input guys! I actually have been in touch with Jan. He said he'd rather do a hands on tune for the best results, but of course remote is an option as well. It would be ideal, but it's a big trip, and I already have my vacation time (and money!) next year earmarked for a trip to Europe.
However, I do agree that it's good policy to forge relationships with professionals like your mechanic, tuner, etc.
A trip back up the coast in my tuned car would be a blast, too... -
Thanks, I'll check out your thread! I almost missed this post.
Jan mentioned a good dyno in Seattle... that's certainly a more feasible trip, something I could do for the weekend. My girlfriend would like a weekend there, too!

While a custom tune for an R50 will yield results, it will not be anything near what can be gained by tuning an R53. So most don't bother touching the ECU on an R50, instead they start with an R53.
-
Yeah, I understand the tuned R50 is a real rarity. Common sense dictates if I want more power, to buy a more powerful car... however, I'm deep into this car mod-wise (see sig.) and I'd hate to start all over again with suspension, etc, on another car.

Yes but, when you dont have or want an R53, it makes sense.
There is actually quite a bit besides just HP that can be gained by tuning an R50. Granted you will see a gain in power aswell but it will only be 10 maby 15HP. The R50's weigh so much less that it is more noticable than 10 HP on a 53, not to mention where that power is being added.
