Rock slide on US 129 is between the Dragon and Happy Valley Road/Foothills Prkwy. Removal scheduled to take several weeks. Road will be blocked at times, now one lane open w/flaggers. No guarantee it will stay open. No way to check ahead. Alternatives - Cherohala Skyway and US 441 Great Smoky Mountains. It's a long way to backtrack if road closed.

Video of driver hitting rock slide.

Too bad it isn't totally blocked for a few months.

Would keep the TN LEOs away.

Wow - isn't one of the biggest rules posted for the Dragon . . . pay attention - watch ahead and pay attention - then pay more attention . . . wow.

:lol::lol: My laugh of the day.

I was telling Mark/Lotsie that I will be going to the Dragon for the first time in May----in a MINIVAN. :frown5:

I'm taking our students to the area for the geology. I'll have to keep my eyes off the geology and on the road! :eek6:

On another note - Nathan will you or someone there be monitoring and posting more road closure info closer to MOTD?

Normally this is not an issue. However this year due to the wet winter there have been many in the area. The largest being on I-40 near the TN-NC state line that has the interstate closed since the end of October. Slated to reopen 3/31.

The TN DOT website, TDOT SmartWay - Tennessee Department of Transportation- is pretty darn good about publishing these issues.

But just think how easy it will be to study the geology since they were kind enough to put it in the road for you.

    NEWS UPDATE:

We are looking at a long closure from the TN side approach to the Dragon. TDOT has said more than 30 days before US129 can be reopened. Looks like there is a 60 ton rock than is in danger of dropping on the road. 2 weeks just to get a plan together and get the bids in and probably a min of two weeks to complete work

Ha ha, yeah! What's great for geologists is not so great for drivers.
