Owen Trinkler Legacy Credit Union 200 Race Preview

This is like 'Old Home Week' for the drivers of the #196 RSR Motorsports Mini Cooper S. For Jade Buford, this is his home circuit where he does all his offseason testing and training to gear up for the rigors of the Koni Challenge Series ST Class competition. His co-driver, Owen Trinkler, is a full-time instructor for the Porsche Sport Driving School at the circuit and the pairing has a good bit of confidence going into this round of the series. In fact, Trinkler was Buford's instructor at the school when deciding to start his career in motor sports.

The team has had a roller coaster season so far, and is looking to build off this weekends' event to net the good results on a more consistent race- to-race basis. States Trinkler; "At Watkins we had a great run going, leading by over 11 seconds at one point, only to have a bad radio put us out of sorts and cost us the win, but the car was great. We really thought we had a good car for Mid Ohio, but chased the set ups all weekend long."

For Barber however, Trinkler knows the car is good, and for he and his team mate there is no lack of knowledge of their surroundings. "ST Class didn't run at Barber last year, but in '07 this was a good track for the Mini having run and finishing near the front of the pack. I think we have the car, team and ultimately the driver pairing to push to the front again."

This is the third season developing the Cruise America Mini Cooper S's for the RSR Motorsports squad, and on the tighter circuits such as Lime Rock Park, they have been a force to be reckoned with and that only bodes well for the 3-car team this weekend. The same holds true when looking at the upcoming races as the following round at Montreal's Trois-Rivieres circuit for the Grand Prix would favor these well sorted short wheelbase cars on its twisty road course.

The two and a half hour race will kick off at 2:50 pm on Saturday, July 18th. This will be a split-class weekend, so the bigger GS Class cars will host their race at 8:20am on Sunday.

If you're new to the Grand-Am KONI Challenge and the RSR efforts and thinking about watchig the race telecast on 25 July (on Speed, 12 PM EST), here's the easy way to tell which MINI is which. They don't always get a lot of air time so sometimes we have to make do with just glimpses in the background and the numbers aren't always visible. Should be different at Barber though since it's an ST-only race so the cameras won't be spending most of their time focused on the GS cars.

A while back the organizers asked Randy to do something to help them discern one MINI from another so the team came up with a great way to retain the identical overall graphic design but with a change in the color scheme in obvious places.

Here's the code - they're all red and blue in the same places but then either black, white or yellow (the pics below are all lifted from RSR's gallery).

#196 is red, WHITE and blue

According to live timing they're on lap 51 and all three MINIs are in the top 10.

Team Report / Barber Wrap up

All in all a pretty good weekend.

196 w/ Jade Buford and Owen Trinkler = 4th place

Jade qualified and started the car. Barber is his home track and it showed. He started 16th and drove the car to 5th for the driver change at lap 41. Owen took the seat and re-entered the race in 12th. He pushed hard and ended up in 4th by lap 83 and the checkered flag. He was only a few tenths behind the 111 Subaru and would have taken a 3rd place podium if the race had gone on another lap or two.

This was Jade's best drive of the year as he showed real speed and maturity by keeping the car out of trouble and saving the tires and brakes for Owen.

198 w/ Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood = 8th place

Adam qualified the car 4th. Unfortunately, he was called for a stop and go penalty for jumping the start. It was a judgement call by Grand Am. The 2nd place qualifier in front of him checked up at the start and he jumped out to avoid contact. The penalty put him back to last place at lap three. Adam then went on a tear and drove to 6th on lap 43 for the driver change. Trevor re-joined in 12th and eventually finished 8th. The rear tires were corded at about lap 75 which locked him into 8th as his lap times fell off. Both Adam and Trevor had inspired drives.

197 w/ VJ Mirazyan and Randy Smalley = 12th Place

A great drive by VJ who qualified 10th and drove to 5th at lap 52 for the driver change. Randy took the car in 14th and eventually drove to 12th. There was a problem with the intercooler in the 197 causing very high inlet temps and a big drop in HP. Supercharged engines do not like high inlet temps and the ECU responds by retarding timing and adding fuel.

Thanks for the great fan turn out. I think this was the highest turnout of Mini owners this year. Your support is appreciated.

Next stop is Trois Rivieres (3R) in Canada. This is a street race and Mini friendly.

BARBER WILL BE TELEVISED SATURDAY JULY 25 at NOON Eastern on Speed

Speed filmed all three pit stops and interviewed 4 of our drivers. This race will have great Mini coverage.

That was some great coverage! I'm torn between preferring the combined GS/ST races for the great multi-class action or the split class ST-only races for the better MINI coverage. I'll take either though because this series is always fun to watch! Too bad the next televised KONI race won't air until October. :cryin:
