I've seen a few speculative stories. Tend to dismiss such articles unless they pass the "but, why?" test or unless I read some version of "confirmed."
At first I thought that asking why BMW would want to buy De Tomaso was a little like asking why Audi would want to buy Ducati (see that story here) but it's really not even close...or is it?
Before Audi bought it, Ducati was already a thriving company with a good product and customer base. Unless I'm wrong, De Tomaso is struggling to stay alive and close to circling the drain...or already there. Is that not true?

Why did Audi want Lamborghini?
They did a heck of a job resurrecting the brand and injecting some German engineering into a brand that for the most part was very pretty, very expensive junk.
BMW could bring back the M1 like they hint at every now again and use the same underpinnings to support a Pantera and/or Mangusta. Mush as the Gallardo and R8 share a lot of basics. -
N2MINI MINI of the Month
I wish it was becasue they want to produce a sports car that competes with the likes of Lotus, but maybe have a cheaper entry level version then Lotus, and yet not be compared to the BMW line..
In the real world I don't see it happening. They don't want anything they own to 1 up the BMW line which is why the MINI will always be a few steps behind in performance and technology, compared to BMW... -

I think at one point BMW did supply engines for some De Tomaso cars.
