The problem with an All - Season tire is there are just to many compromises. They suck in all seasons since they have to be adequate in so many situations. Why not look into a winter run flat on a set of steelies or other inexpensive wheel.
-
As I said they are for the wifes car. For her, run flats make sense. Now perhaps a set of winters might work. It's just that we don't get all that much snow up here St. Louie way(execpt this year).
I debated on this All Season thing because of this latitude for some time. For me Winter style All Seasons work (Conti DSW's) and a set of Summer stickies
For her All Seasons are just fine for her purposes -
I really, really like my Conti DSW's as a performance winter tire (they call it a All Season)
Had 7-9" of snow here and they ate it up! -

fwiw, I was very unimpressed with the performance of the GY RFs that came on my MINI. I think I slid more on them than I have with summer non-RFs.

If you get snow in your area spend the extra money for a cheap set of rims and run dedicated snow and summers, you will not regret it. -
Ok, let me try to get this back on track.....
Prefer wife to keep the runflats as I do not want her to deal with changing a tire for her MCS
Need something with a little more winter grip than current Dunlops
All Seasons work well for wife's purposes and where we are at geographically
Suggestions? (other than Conti ones that Redbeard mentioned and David from Germany rebutted are crap&Jeff from NC let me know Goodyears suck) -
Only thing I see on TireRack are the Bridgestone Blizak RunFlats having more grip than Conti
-
I run blizzaks and love them. For a true winter tire they are top notch!
When the weather warms up they are not as good as a summer tire though. -
Might be a good option for the wife
She might complain a bit about the ride in warmer weather but I'll know she has plenty of grip.
She is a pretty sedate driver (right lane most of the time, never puts it in Sport mode, etc, etc) -

If you run a winter tire in warm(above 45F) you will wear them out very fast. You are right Tim, here in STL we don't really have a need for a snow tire, just the ability to drive in a little snow now and then. But a winter run flat on cheap wheels may be the way to go if you need a run flat on her car. Run the OEM wheels with a nicer set of summer run flats for most of the year.

Mark,
Living here I keep looking for a way to have one tire that meets all road conditions year round. This latitude just doesn't quite lend itself to that. Sigh......

No problems to report. At 6 below they are kinda hard. But other than that I like 'em.

My only problem was I went through my set in about 18K miles
I really can't stick the wife with a tire repair kit although she has AAA kit. :frown5: -

18k is about 3 years for me. I can live with that.

I'm on third set of tires since I got the MINI last year. That's not including the run-flats I tossed after 3k miles. Admittedly there has been 16 Autocrosses and three track days thrown in there as well as the 30k miles...
