Experience: short term testing with an instrumented car.

I have installed both an M7 heat shield and also one from NM Engineering (MINI Mania). I also installed thermocouple instrumentation on the compressor section of the turbocharger and on the underside of the hood below the scoop. Made many test runs with both shields under several operating conditions. Took lots of data (used a data logger) plotted the results. Both heat shields caused the turbo to run hotter and did not really help the underside of the hoodscoop either. These two "shields" insulate the turbo and are really only meant to facilitate induction of cool air into an open style CAI...and do not benefit the scoop at all. (contrary to one company's claim, insulating the turbo does not make it more efficient...that is just pure BS) I will never install one permanently on my car, either one will absolutely shorten the life of the turbocharger. I can post the results if anyone is interested. By the way.. WMW ...MINI is now installing a shield similar to yours that fits under the scoop. I logged data on that too. Well. It's a little better than no shield but I was not satisfied so I made my own. It does not insulate the turbo so it will mot overheat. I haven't made the test runs yet but the hood is cool to the touch. Oh, and another bit of info.... The hood is hottest about 5 minutes AFTER the car is shut down.

Oh and if you have a CF scoop it is a thermoSET not a thermoPLASTIC. Thermoset does not melt or soften with excess heat. Standard scoop is thermoplastic so it does soften/sag.

(Side Note) Most of my driving has been in heats up to 120 outside air temps during the summer. All of my openings in the scoop grill were opened at the time of the M7 Shield installation.

Additional note: On the underside of the heat shield, I've added a self adhesive DEI Reflect-a-Cool material which I personally think dropped the scoop temperature even more, at least a difference I can notice. Reflect-A-Cool | Design Engineering, Inc.

I'm not gonna follow instructions...but a buddy of mine has the M7 on his 2008 Cooper S Clubby with JCW tuning kit. All was well until he installed some hood stripes...within a few weeks the stripes startedto discolour. The heat from the turbo seems to be pooling on the outside right of the M7 heat shield and cooking his stripes...
His scoop is perfectly fine though.

No melting but I'm usually careful to open the bonnet after a track session and autocross runs.

I've recently ceramic coated the exhaust manifold and down pipe and put the WMW Turbo Wrap on.

stock scoop has just stated to warp again, but now out of warranty. Replaced it with M7 Vortex. I am not feeling the heat I felt before.

 

A Service Advisor recommended that I remove the heat shield because it's bad for the turbo. I chose to ignore him.
