A sheep on the lam in Ireton was killed in a one-car accident Saturday, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday. The sheep was struck and killed in the road by a northbound 2003 Mini Cooper on Eagle Avenue driven by Jose Barrera-Vargas, 34, of Sioux City, deputies said. The accident occurred at about 12:50 a.m. Barrera-Vargas was not injured, but the sheep did not survive, deputies said. The car sustained $2,000 in damage. The sheep escaped from a fenced-in grove one mile north of town. The sheep, which belonged to Howard Van Engen, of Hawarden, Iowa, was among 10 on loan to a friend in Ireton to graze on weeds and grass in the grove.
